Which Wow expansions did you love or hate or just find meh?
I’ve been playing from the start of BFA I liked BFA a lot some fun stuff going on.
Shadowlands was just bad in my opinion all the enemies kinda feel the same you were limited on exploring the maw and torgast was just alright after a while
Dragon flight is a step in the right direction for sure but still didn’t really change all that much but with how the patches have been and with account wide rep/talents I hope more players play soon
My overall feeling about wow In its current state is that they need to figure out how to drop the sub price and make money another way (maybe trading post?) on top of that I think they should have a console release to bring in a whole flood of new players.
S-tier
(roughly “tied” for me, all were excellent)
- Vanilla (og version)
- The Burning Crusade (og version)
- Legion
A-tier
- Wrath of the Lich King (og version)
- Mists of Pandaria
- Vanilla Classic
B-tier
- Battle for Azeroth
- The Burning Crusade Classic
- Wrath of the Lich King Classic
C-tier
- Dragonflight
D-tier
- Warlords of Draenor
- Cataclysm
F-tier
- Shadowlands
I…can accept this list as well, this is a pretty accurate break down of the game, only thing i would change would be to put Battle for azeroth into D tier simply because of how god awful everything past atal.
idk i think df belongs in b
S-Rank

legion > wod > shadowlands > bfa > drag-on fart (dragonflight)
Interesting…
If you don’t mind my asking, what makes you rank Shadowlands “above” DF?
cool stuff happened
edgy armor and weapons
sire denathrius
castle nathria plate armor
Yeah I think this is an elephant in the room/potential opportunity for them
If they can somehow bring WoW to console/Xbox, that could potentially be a huge boost in sub/player numbers. Remember that most normies are still gaming on consoles, PC gamers are still a minority even in the current year
Or at least… when I overhear normies talking gaming it’s usually in the context of console(s) or mobile/phone games. PC gamers (…such as WoW players) seem uncommon out in the general public
Main challenge would probably be implementing another “ability prune” since trying to somehow use 20-30+ buttons/keybinds on an Xbox controller that only has like 8-12 physical buttons is going to be a turnoff for normie gamers and too complicated to be practical
Maybe they will develop a “lite” version of WoW on the side (with much fewer buttons/abilities so it “works” with an Xbox controller) designed specifically for the normie/general public market? I dunno
I play Vanilla-WOTLK then BFA-current.
S Tier
Vanilla - Nothing beats the original experience back in 05.
Burning Crusade - They took Vanilla and made it 5x better. Every class and spec was now viable and the game was still hardcore focused on raid content.
A Tier
Dragonflight - The expansion is a huge improvement over BFA and Shadowlands. The gameplay, story, consistent 8-week patches, etc. is all much better. It’s been knocked down a few pegs though because of the rather lousy M+ seasons including the god comp fiasco.
B Tier
WOTLK - The expansion went full casual mode with welfare epics, dungeon finder, cross realms, etc. Ulduar was the only good raid with every other one being a stinker or mid at best: even ICC. While having the most subscribers, this expansion caused the most long-term damage to the games community.
C Tier
Shadowlands - This expansion was a bit of a rollercoaster. The poor decisions, long wait between 9.0-9.1, streamer strikes, lawsuits, etc. was a hot mess. Once 9.1.5 came out the expansion became a lot better which is why I’m ranking it C-tier. The raids, dungeons, etc. were all good.
D Tier
BFA - I came back in 8.3 to the game and holy heck the amount the grinding I needed to do to catch up was insane. I had to farm revered with multiple factions, grind up two legendaries, M+, etc. Just from that experience alone made me want to quit playing. Shadowlands in comparison was far less grindy to gear up new characters.
I tend to agree, even in early 2009 I started to get “casualization” vibes and the experience definitely started to feel like a step down from TBC. Don’t get me wrong the game was still great, but you could “feel it in the air” that the game had started to go casual/it was the early parts of the slippery downward slope
I theorize that other external factors played a role in the sub numbers peaking during Wrath (other than the game being good):
- the global 2008 economic collapse (…coincidentally happened right as WoTLK launched) meant large swathes of the population were suddenly unemployed and had a lot of free time on their hands (…the perfect scenario for picking up an MMO due to unlimited free time)
- the WoW-themed TV commercials seemed to peak around 2007-2008, so normies caught wind of WoW just as WoTLK came out/it was in the normie consciousness
- there was that one famous WoW-themed South Park episode at some point in the mix
- Millennials were in their late-teens/early-20’s at the time… and “it just so happens” that is a perfect storm of unlimited free time when paired with a timesink-y MMO like WoW… the largest gaming demographic basically “came of age” or “were just entering adulthood” from the years 2004-2010 (a pure coincidence)
4, 1, 8, 6, 8, 9, 6, 7, 1, 6.
WotLK > Legion > TBC > MoP > DF > Cata > Vanilla > WoD > BfA > SL
1: Wotlk
2-8: Something something
9: DF
Wrath>Legion>Wod>cata>tbc>mop>bfa>all other expansions ever released for other mmos>shadowlands>dumpster fire>DF.
All of them were ok except DF which =BLAH
8,6,7,5,3,0,9
It’s interesting seeing a few “SL > DF” rankings in this thread, if you don’t mind my asking… what is your reasoning for DF being “worse” than SL?
I dunno about you guys, but to me SL was the absolute bottom of the WoW totem pole - and this also seems to be verified by the sheer number of players that unsubbed and never came back (including a number of forum regulars/GD’ers)
Shadowlands is also the only expansion that “shook up” my streamers list, seems like around 30-40% of my “followed” WoW streamers on twitch no longer play the game/have permanently moved on to streaming other non-WoW games
Tbh everything prior to Legion I was a child so take with a grain of salt, but:
S-Rank
- Legion
- Dragonflight
A-Rank
- Warlords of Draenor
- Mists of Pandaria
B-Rank
- Battle for Azeroth
C-Rank
- Shadowlands
WoD I was very casual but I remember it fondly. I absolutely loved the story and the world, and the model update was so exciting
