Like others said, only unobtainable pets are really rare. Like in Eastern Plaguelands there was a ghost wolf with a dagger stuck in its head. I think you can tame it, but the dagger disappears now. But if you tamed it before the change, the dagger is still there.
Ultra rare.
Maybe Fenryr in Mythic Hall of Valors for a wolf with stuck spears.

Hardly any of these are true anymore, 99% of them are “fixed” like oil stained pets and stuff and the warlock puppy dogs are all removed.

if you truly want an extremely rare pet youll have to go to the ends of the earth and I mean that literally im talking the furthest reaches of western Vashyr its so far away from everything the terrain turns an ash colored grey and youll find a spirit crab out there the ghostcrawler
only reason hes so rare is because most hunter dont have the patience to travel so far out into the boonies to find him

Theres not really any rare hunter pets anymore, the puppy dogs were pretty ridiculous in the terms to get them, that was about it until legion-now.
yeah that’s why I said MOST and yes I have him on my hunter that’s why I know where to find him believe me you don’t travel 500 miles into that kind of wilderness for no reason
funny story though because in my case It really wasn’t intended I kind of found him by accident wasn’t even aware he existed or was even searching for him but my rare spawn addon went off and alerted me to its presence 
I think the rarest pet is a slime pet that could be tamed through a bug. Blizzard fixed the bug really quick but they let hunters who already tamed it keep it.
This is the one who had them. I going to go and get them this week end. Look back Friday us time.
Yeah I got that guy, when I was reading up on him it seems that you can’t currently get him with a knife in its head which starting my Hunter 2 weeks ago, I caught him but ended up not having a knife in its head (but its the only common “wolf” skin that you can get with a faded body). Today if you did catch him with a knife in its head in open world he will keep the knife, but if you bring him out in a pvp or pve setting the knife gets removed.
They have them broken down by family and rarity. It is a really useful tool.
If you are new to the class i would just got after pets you like before you start camping the really rares ones.
look up gara, once you have the expansion of draenor its really fun and looks very cool ( it has dialouge and storyline! )
