No one ever wants anything below Rank 5 for any crafted gear. I think ranks should simply be removed and just increase the number of skill points per expansion to compensate (i.e. 200 is the max for each expansion instead of 100). Its impossible to make any money or even craft if you dont no life professions the first week of an expansion and god forbid you chose the wrong spec.
I’ve had multiple rank 2-4 crafted gear personal orders from folks. Mostly people looking to get a quick ilvl boost for their alt so they do something specific but a couple were for pvp. I haven’t had any rank 1 orders. I almost did but I didn’t have the pattern the person was wanting.
I’m ok with the ranks. I think it helps delineate the crafters early in the expac to you can have folks focus on different types of crafts. It really builds server identity early on. And for crafters that are getting close but not quite there yet, they can use concentration to get the final rank.
I think the only main problem I’ve run into so far is that there’s a lot more rare materials (which makes costs go up) and there were a few specs that were tougher to skill up than others. I made a bad mistake early in BS, but I a little perusing on wowhead and I was able to find something (a bit pricy) to get me out of the skill point hole. I think if they fix that up, it will be a lot better.
The nice thing about the KP allocations though is that the trees are not deep and you can get 20-30 KP a week now, so it’s really easy just to stop where you are and switch to a different tree if you messed up (barring a skill point req like I ran into).
Problem is not the ranks per say, its the end of DF that has spoiled the expectations. We are in what the 5 week? Expecting a R5 item with missive/embellish/myth crest is a wee bit ( insert various comment about being stupid here) and wanting it done for cheap on top of course!
