Ranking and work/school

Any students or folks in the labor force planning to do the grind? Is it possible?

I understand the time commitment is rather big, but iirc it was doable back in the day, at least for ranks 11-13 specially after x-realm bgs.
Competition will be higher since servers are more populated than in original classic, but that also means more people can achieve higher ranks.

It will depend on how much you work/study, your home life, and how competitive your server is. Generally, I’d say anything above rank 10 is out of bounds for us working folk. There will be some dedicated few that make it higher though.

I’m in a similar situation. I just want the mounts again. But i work 55+ a week so weekends are when I grind.

I’m just going to play whatever I want as I feel like doing it and let the chips fall where they may… right up until the point I realize another 10 hours could have gotten me something. I will then most likely no life it hard up to rank 10 or so.

I’ll relay my experience to you.

I was in college at the time when I did the grind back in vanilla. Going into it, I had a 3.8 GPA, my own place and a job. By the end of it, I had a 2.7 GPA, quit my job, and moved into my girlfriends house.

You can’t put in the kind of hours required to reach the end without something else giving. If I could go back, I’d convince the college me not to do that crap. Not worth it at all.

If you have no life already, then go for it I guess, since you have nothing to lose. Just know you’ll be competing against account sharers, paid farmers, win traders, queue dodgers, and all sorts of other things that would make your dad pretty disappointed in your lack of sportsmanship.

I’m gonna be trying for r11. I made it to R3 standing 248 last week, but Ive been slacking on the gold farm and still desperately need my epic. I never did the grind in vanilla, so Im kind of worried if I take too much time off wPvP I’ll fall behind and make it more difficult for myself to hit r11 relatively quickly. I dont expect to do it before BGs come out though. While I can play a fair amount I do have work and other obligations to take care of.

Right now none of us know how many will be doing the intense Rank 14 push in Classic. It will be crazy no doubt, but may actually be possible for many of us this time around.

I intend to get to rank 10 and then evaluate what I am up against. Rank 10 is easy. Obtain 8000+ honor every week and you will eventually get there. The 8000 will overcome the built in weekly honor decay and the “+” will move you up. How long it take depends on how much you exceed the basic 8k. Once BGs are in game, weekly 8k honor is easy. (In fact, because of how decay impacts rank points, you can make much less than the 8k and move up through the lower ranks quickly.)

Over rank 10, the other factors besides honor that impact rank point start to dominate - things like your server ranking position and how many others are trying to enter your next rank. But assess that later when you are closer to those rarified ranks.

Oh, its only 8k/wk that will get me to r10? Are you sure? I had 26k the first week and have 7k already despite only spending about 3 hours total pvping this week. That does make me feel better. I was worried Id have to pretty much drop my other WoW activites to only focus on PvP grinding for awhile.

It depends on your server. For now with world pvp only, 8k-10k a week is a safe bet for making progress over time.

When BGs hit, those numbers may change a little, maybe up to about 20k required. I don’t know. Its really hard to say because we just don’t know what the queue times will be and just how many no lifers are going to push the brackets up.

BGs launch in like 2 weeks and past R4 you can’t get more than a rank per week. R11 is a solid 2 months out even if you are #1 every week.

Im fine with it increasing with BGs. My problem right now is that Im running around the world solo Pvping, so most of the time I’m either getting rolled by 10+ raids of allies, or Im getting CP leeched/leeching CP by other Horde farming in the area.

While rolling solo is some of the best honor, I have no delusions that I would be able to do 25k+ honor/week like I did the first week. I just dont have the time. Once BGs are out it focuses the honor in one area and Im fighting combatants that I dont have to chase down to kill and wait to rez

Edit: Lain I thought it was 2 ranks per week max after r4?

whathsthat?!

An idiom, probably originated from gambling or something? Not sure!

Not from what I read/heard. Guess we will get a better idea next week.

You will find your ranking up to be less and less each week anyways. As a main pvp/BG spammer in vanilla I do not recall ranking up each week and I was playing a good deal as a high schooler. I ended at rank 9(.99999999). Forever salty I gave up pvping when I heard of the TBC prepatch removing honor grind…launched 4 weeks later.

I remember telling myself that I probably could have gotten R11 if I didn’t stop pvping so which when you think about the implications of me thinking 4 weeks was enough time to get another rank I doubt you’ll be within striking distance of R11 by the time BGs launch.

Your numbers are not cleared by diminishing returns. If you kill the same player 5 times, you receive 0 honor, but the statistics don´t factor that in. So in total, your honor is a lot less each day, than what you see.

People with an intact RL made Rank 14, I made it twice back in the days pre xrealm. You just had to win all your BG´s, which I did. With xrealm, winning is less important, as your HK`s will not diminish, as the player pool is much bigger.

That leads to the positive that even low skilled folks solo, can get to Rank 14. The negative is, it will take a lot more time now and you must hunt HK´s, and not victories. It can be more beneficial to grind a long AV, than to win three quick WSG´s.

I would wait a few months, before I attempt a push to Rank 13+. Rank 11 is easy to do, just grind HK´s for a few weeks casually, anything above requires more than just a few hours each day, especially if your server is very competetive.

The realm pop is not important, what´s important is the amount of people that actually pvp. You can be on a 5k server and have it easier, than the guy on a 2k if on said, 50% pvp, while on the other just 5%.

That´s not the case.

You can jump from 7 to 9, just like from 8 to 10. I did so back in the days. Keep in mind, the system is not a stiff rank, it´s a progressing bar and said bar, can stop a few mm before the next rank, so that a high honor gain in the week after, will give you two ranks.

Ooooophhhh. Damn bro lol. Not worth.

I made it to LT Comm back in the day before I gave up. Unless you have a dedicated BG team you can run with like 10 hours a day you will probably have a hard time hitting GM

Well that’s not exactly what I meant. If you start at R8 at 0% of the bar I don’t think you can see R10 even if you’re #1 for the week.

But yes you could skip a rank based on that. You’re getting, say, 1.25 worth of rank and your current bar progress may let you skip an actual rank because you were at 9.999999.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but there’s honor farmers on multiple servers that hit 450k+ the first week. When BGs hit, the numbers needed to progress past 11 and try to get into 14 go beyond 1Mil. When I did Rank 14, I remember I was hitting 1.2-1.5Mil per week when BGs were out.

We are talking about rank 10 though. Don’t need bracket 1, to hit 10.
