Noob here,
To my understanding Honor Rank 3 gives 10% discount for Riding Skill and Mount, which should be 10g in savings.
Is it worth PVPing pre-40 for the discount or is it quicker just to grind the 10g for the Mount + Riding skill?
A side question also: if I was to do battlegrounds for a few hours on the weekend, what PVP rank should I expect to achieve?

Rank 3 is super easy to get.
The low-level BG are packed with twinks and they’re pretty miserable to play in unless you go in with friends and gear yourself. It can also be a pain to get rank 3 on world pvp at lower levels. But if you don’t mind going into BG and being farmed by twinks you can hit rank 3 fairly quickly.
However, it’s probably much faster to just farm up 10g. A couple of circuits with herbalism can easily get you that kind of gold in no time at all.
10g is basically irrelevant. 100g off the epic mount is nice though.
for 40 mount? eh, the 10g you’d save could be made in less time than it’d likely take to get to r3 at 40.
now the 60 mount, yeah getting r3 isn’t the worst idea.
I played some BGs in the 39 bracket recently and it was fun. It wasn’t filled with twinks in the games I did either although I know twinks exist in this bracket. It was almost all levelers ranging from about 34=39.
Getting rank 3 is also very easy.
You have to decide if it’s worth the 10g or not. There are a lot of ways to make that gold quick even at the low levels. If you don’t want to PVP just farm some light feathers or kill the elemental airs in Westfall for the magic dust or something and make the gold fast.
R3 is easy but you’ll have to suffer through some twink matches to get it. You’re better off spending that time just grinding mobs in one area and vendoring/auctioning anything good. I was short 15g when I dinged 39 and just spent most of that level grinding raptors to pay for my mount.
Also, queues can be long.
I got to rank 8 on accident. Many people in my guild are rank 6 or higher from incidental world PvP just going to raid.
You could get rank 3 by doing a single BG or getting 15 HKs while leveling.
ITT: the non-existent twink plague will prevent a non-twink for hitting Rank 3.
You can get Rank 3 at Level 29/39 with <2 hours of gameplay.
I have some Level 29s that havent got an HK in over a month and are still Rank 2 despite the decay.
Yeah it’s kind of like how people claim that every BG is against a premade.
The 29 and 39 brackets aren’t that bad. Yeah you usually run into a few twinks but the twinks can be on your side too. Plus rank 3 is so fast. It’s not a big deal.
Level 29 is a great bracket for non-twink Mages.
I just run around casting Rank 1 Frost Bolt, Rank 2 Scorch is my primary damage, with Rank 3 Fireblasts as needed. Sheep Rogues/Hunters, Counter-Spell healers, Cone of Cold for group skirmishes, and save Frost Nova and Blink for escaping.
Pretty sure I got rank 3 on my rogue with like a single AB win.
Don’t worry so much about the twinks, but do try to go in at an x7-x9 level if possible.
I think I’ve seen two kinds of leveling BG’s so far in Classic:
I just dinged 60 on a toon on a fresh server and I did some bgs while leveling for fun, I didn’t even consider the rank 3 discount but my experience was pretty hit or miss. Either the twinks on my team carried or the twinks on their team crushed ours.
Had to land like 8+ viper stings to oom a caster because they had so much mana. At best I could annoy and harass them until some twink from my team went in for the kill on an oom caster.
Could very well be a waste of time and be miserable if you get unlucky games. If you don’t actually care for PVP I honestly would skip it.
Low level characters don’t get as much honor as level 60s but are subject to the same ranking rules/brackets afaik. It won’t be just 1 BG to get rank 3.
Also we are talking about 10 gold here. Even if you got your rank 3 just by entering a BG it could still take way longer (real time not game time) than just farming the gold since you have to wait for a Tuesday to come around.
For a level 60 mount then sure, go do an AB or two and save your 100 gold. For a level 40 though just farm light feathers, fish oily blackmouths, do some herbalism, or whatever other methods there are to get the money.
Note that mounts are bind on use. You can have a rank 3 honored friend of your race buy the mount for you with full discount and give it to you.
The gold difference is negligible at this point in the game
You can have someone else who’s already honored and rank 3 buy the mount for you.

Not if you’re level 40 and playing a new character on a server where you don’t have any 60s
Even then the time you put into the pvp to get r3 at 40 you could have easily generated more than the 10g you saved
