I killed that same guy (level 20 NPC) on my way to RFK and didn’t realize it was a civilian… I also lost my Corporal rank down to Private. Yeesh!

Most likely someone in your group / raid killed a civilian NPC. They have gray nameplates, and if you kill one you lose a TON of rank instantly.
People are griefing others by killing civilians on purpose in Ashenvale. It’s a problem.
