I forgot how fun it was, even more than my usual BM spec which I’ve played for 17+ years.

Yep and back then they made it with just 4 years of experience, whereas nowadays the devs can’t get it right with 18 years of experience. Shameful.

i’m quite enjoying it over MM and BM for leveling. I always enjoyed it back in the day. MM and SV in this iteration are just worlds better than retail IMO.

Can’t but agree. Would still prefer to have gotten to play it on retail again(I generally avoid replaying past games), but even the earily version of the spec, in WotLK, is more enjoyable than what I’ve found in the class on retail, incl the changes for 10.0.

right!! ranged survival was the best thing to happen since sliced bread. i really loved the mop version most but ranged survival even at its worst layout and playstyle was far superior to the farce that melee survival is or ever will be.

I’m loving how much fun I’m having playing surv right now on classic. Obviously surv is great in pve but I’ve even been playing it on 5s playing with a unholy dk and Aff lock. Just dots for days. Been a blast

Honestly Hunters still have a lot of design issues in WotLK. They’re still using mana (and Viper is a bandaid) , ammo, and the dreaded minimum range. Pets die way too easily so we can just lose a big chunk of our damage to encounter design. It’s pretty immobile. There’s no Trap Launcher which especially hurts with trap dancing/weaving being the meta. Volley for AoE is boring and just a reskinned Blizzard. And while the specs are meaningfully different for the first time, they’re still too similar to one another and we have to wait until Cata and MoP to see them really shine. BM is just boring and practically a dead spec; it doesn’t get any new active gameplay.
But the one key difference is that back in WotLK there was optimism. We could trust Blizzard to make the right changes and make the class better. Sure, there were complaints here and there. But there was trust that we would see the improvements we were looking for and the people designing the class knew what was needed. Contrast that to today where it feels like we have to battle with the devs to get what we need.
BC to WotLK was the single most drastic improvement the class has ever seen, then it’s followed up with another massive improvement in Cata and then refinement in MoP. And like I said earlier in the thread the developers back then were working on way less experience and resources.

i am playing survival in classic right now and while it is good it don’t feel as good as it did in mop or even wod for that matter. but beyond that i just can’t understand why survival was the spec that got the melee treatment. i am all for experiencing new and exciting things in wow but to me it just feels like they choose the wrong spec to be melee.
currently melee survival feels exactly like bm but melee. i don’t like it. it ruins the fantasy for me personally. i grew up playing tides and darkness and warcraft 3 and reading the books about the hunter lore and all the wow characters and for them to put survival hunter melee when the only known melee hunters were bm just don’t make any sense to me.
it is almost as if they are finally realizing their mistake and are trying to build melee survival around the pet and renaming command pet to coordinate with pet to give it the melee master of beasts feels. i wish they could sit down and figure this out and iron out all the wrinkles because ever since melee survival was released in legion it was always just a clunky boring playstyle with no identity or fantasy.

it was always melee. The OG talents literally focused on melee. The only reason people like to say BM is because of rexxar.

Imo, retail msv is more fun to play and has better pvp tools than wrath rsv. I will say LnL trap play is fun. But as time goes on wrath MM will completely outshine anything Wrath Sv can do.

It’s actually true that WotLK SV wasn’t as good in PvP as people remember. The best PvP aspect of the spec was improved traps but it was high enough in the tree for BM/MM builds to take it (just as Aimed Shot is high enough in MM for BM and SV to take it), while MM gets Readiness and the Chimera Shot disarm. Also Hunters in general were in a tenuous spot in PvP due to the minimum range although in WotLK melee classes didn’t have as much gap closing ability as they do in modern times so it holds up (in BC, however, Hunters weren’t in a good spot).
MM will gain a damage lead once it gets better weapons because MM scales steeply with weapon damage while SV doesn’t. However the damage won’t be so dramatic that SV will go to BM status. Back in the day SV still had plenty of players right up until the end of the expansion. It’s not like melee Survival which drops to one of the least popular in the entire game as soon as it’s no longer doing egregiously higher damage v.s. everything else, contrary to the revisionist history of people like Yubie.
Currently in WotLK classic 82% of Hunter parses are Survival. In retail it’s 7%. In both they have a similar damage lead against the 2nd best spec.
Sadly I don’t expect this info to dispel the urban myths about Survival always being an unpopular spec. There are still people to this day who argue that Thori’dal was bad for Hunters or that Survival was a melee spec in Classic. Yeah the comic relief of the Hunter forum still argues that but we expect no better from him. One of the TSL moderators believes it. The fact is these people didn’t arrive to these beliefs through facts so they won’t be convinced with facts either.

Dude has become famous for SV hunter hate. He has few links that he sticks to them and believes whatever Preach says. Dude who has a fetish on cat girls in FF and hates wow.
Yup blizzard butchered this spec once again for some reason. Instead of working similar to legion with flanking strike, they made our whole play style revolve around kill command reset which is 100% BM ability.
