Ranged Holy: Crusader strike to Crusader..."toss."

Yes, Crusader toss was the most creative thing I could come up with.

What if you were to add a talent to modify Crusader strike to a ranged ability for HP generation for Holy paladins?

The goal here is to provide the option to play more like a ranged healer instead of a melee healer. Emphasis on the “option” to heal this way. It doesn’t have to be optimal. It doesn’t have to be mandatory. It just exists for those that like to play this way. (Yes, the damage could change, the mastery is still focused on melee healing, etc.)

Talent: Crusader Toss
Allows Crusader strike to be used up to 30 yards. Damage decreases with range with 30 yards being zero. Generates 1 HP.
Insert sparkly ranged paladin animation

Would this be the easiest way to make ranged holy paladins “better” than they currently are?

Thoughts?

Problem with being ranged: Mastery.

Give it 10-15 yrd range and change it to light sword. The spell will be like Vegito’s spirit sword and would allow us to be a little farther away than melee range.

It will also cleave of course. Cleave heal and dmg

Common misconception people have is that mastery is what keeps us in melee. It is not, not in raids or m+ anyway. Most encounters have more ranged than melee, it’s very likely standing with ranged would net the same benefit if not more from mastery.

There are two reasons people do not stand in ranged:

  1. We are coded as a melee/ranged healer. We still get melee mechanics+ranged mechanics. Some fights are better than others about this but standing at ranged and getting a melee mechanic is pretty detrimental. As long as this exists, it’s unlikely we would be out in ranged too often.

  2. Damage. Caster paladin as it currently is does very little damage compared to being in melee. This is because paladin has a really weird damage profile, most of our damage comes from auto attacks. That is 60-70% of our dps which you get from just being in melee automatically. If you want to do any form of damage as caster in ranged your only options are judgement and HoW (with veneration). That is it, we have no ranged dps abilities outside of that. You would have to run into melee to drop cons to get that damage consistently. You just lose 60-70% of your damage by moving to ranged, so this would need to be solved by giving ranged more dps options like a dps spender or something that isn’t shield of the righteous (which also requires melee for m+).

That is why caster paladin is not ranged. Almost non existent damage profile and the fact we are still coded as a melee with potential to get ranged mechanics.

Oh also movement. This raid has a ton of heavy movement mechanics on almost every boss, so casting 1.9-2 second holy lights consistently is very annoying to do, divine favor was not a good solution to fast cast holy light.

Give us back harsh words

Remove beacon of light from the gcd like major glyph used to do

Allow a capstone talent that reverses mastery to more healing further from target

Revert infusion of light SL changes

Allow veneration to proc off of holy shock crits as well

:ok_hand:

Crusader Hail Mary?

I support Holy having two viable playstyles, but I don’t see how that’s possible without new talents; one to change mastery to work for a ranged playstyle, and talents for ranged CS, ranged SOTR, and ranged auto attack damage.

<edit - I vote the ranged auto attack damage should be named Holy Middle Finger>

They could call it denounce or exorcism.

Personally since the addition of Evokers being mid ranged I feel Caster Paladin could slide into this roll too.

Firstly Crusader Strike should be replaced with Spear of Radiance.

  • Spear of Radiance
10% of base mana 25 yd Range
    Instant 6 sec recharge
    1 Charges
    Requires Paladin
    Requires level 1
    Requires Melee Weapon
Strike the target for [(156.5% of Attack power) * 1] Holy damage.
    Generates 1 Holy Power.
Consecration becomes a 25 yd range targeted AoE.

(Damage should scale higher since we don’t auto attack)

We already have NPCs with Spear throwing animations, just rig it to Paladin and make them throw a glowing radiant spear of holy power.

To easily slide this adjustment in Holy Shock becomes baseline as Holy (Personally I think it should be), your first node is a choice node, Crusader Strike or Spear of Radiance.

Crusader Strike for melee and Spear of Radiance for range. Caters to both play styles, Radiant onslaught gives 2 charges as normal.

While you’ll be midrange you’ll still be up close and personal at times for SoR, Rebuke, HoJ and LoD but then can safely continue everything as normal outside of melee range. Consecration becoming a Ranged ground Target AoE makes Caster Paladin not miss out on so much passive damage or healing.

Yes we are considered as Melee for Mechanics but since mid ranged easily enough time to group into melee for those mechanics as we will be casting mid ranged.

Our Mastery regardless needs to be changed, keep it as it is but Allies within 20 yards get the full effect and drops off every yard outside of that.

Honestly it would be nice if they increased Holy Shock’s Glimmer of Light damage, that would benefit both melee and ranged build since ironically both builds need higher DPS(and heal output but that’s another matter) to compete with presvoker and resto druid.

This exists in the game files

Why the hell havnt they given caster Paladins this?. It’s perfect.

Same reason this isn’t adapted to be part of a choice node with Divine Steed

Yea I can’t bring myself to play holy paladin. The whole melee healer without any mobility thing isn’t for me. Fistweaver seems fine just because they have at least 3 buttons to get out of dodge. Our wheelchair of a horse meanwhile…

I just miss the good old days of Holy Paladin :pensive:

I lived in BGs playing Shockadin for an expac or 2. Even as it became worse and worse. I havent bothered since before BFA though.

A fun build ruined.

Now a spec outdamaged by healer specs which dont need to do damage in order to heal. Just ridiculous.

I was excited when Holy Paladin was getting a caster build back, seriously so much nostalgia.

What we ended up with seems like a half done attempt. There’s so much they can do to make it work and cater to both play styles.

If Caster Paladins come back I’ll seriously main holy once again and never look back.

60% of hpal damage is auto attack? Big RIP on that

Yeah in raid it is. Actually insane. If you don’t count blessing of summer, it is just cons and auto attack. Add summer into that and it’s summer-auto attack-cons or summer-cons-auto attack. Judgement/HoW/CS is just not as high as it used to be, especially CS.

The damage profile in PvP is definitely lacking which explains a lot since consecration and auto attack damage would hardly ever be used

I remember the first time I saw this in the files, I was thinking maybe we’d see it one day. Today is not yet that day xD
