So since the patch yesterday I’ve had 2 different “PC suddenly reboots” incidents with no prior warning, has only happened while playing WoW.
What happens is as follows: I’ll be playing WoW and also having Chrome open in the background (…this is my background noise from streams/talkshows/etc), suddenly the screen goes black and the PC reboots itself
Only clues I found were from EventViewer…
I’m curious about the timing of it all - since the PC ran solid/no crashed for weeks and weeks prior to the patch. Patch goes live and suddenly it’s restarting randomly??
It’s like, if my PC was overheating or something along those lines then surely I would’ve had these random reboot episodes in the weeks leading up to the patch - but my PC was rock solid up until recently
Anyone else dealt with this kind of code/error/scenario?
My wife’s system has had the screen go black and then reboot a few times since the 10.2.7 patch, and only while running WoW. No issues prior to the patch.
I played about 2 hours in retail (queuing a few epic BGs) and about 1.5 hours in Cata Classic (casual leveling/questing) last night and didn’t have the mysterious black-screen crash/reboot thing happen once
I’m guessing they must’ve issued some sort of stealth hotfix or something in the background, it’s possible they fixed something on their end with the patch
The game cannot cause your computer to shut down. The things that can are heat, Failing power supply, Failing piece of hardware. error 41 just means the computer did not shut down properly. You will want to check the computers temperatures, check the Power supply. To start. Hardware monitor can check the temps.
that is not true. Game can conflict with driver and cause a restart. Whether it is game or driver at fault idk. It is happening to me. It is not temperature and ONLY happens with wow and wow classic. Nothing else. could happen in 5 minutes or hours. Every other game i try runs computer way harder and doesn’t shut it down.
Yup, using the process of elimination I quickly concluded it was somehow related to WoW specifically
My PC was rock-solid for weeks/months beforehand… and then conveniently it starts “randomly” crashing/rebooting itself starting on THE SAME DAY the patch goes live?? It’s obviously WoW as the main culprit, fairly easy to figure out when comparing the before and after; my PC was fine before the patch, started “randomly” rebooting after the patch… and only while playing WoW
That is my point. I honestly had previous issues that were fixed, none wow related. Then I have zero issues for weeks. Game updates and I have nothing but issues with both versions of wow and wow only. If something changes and other games have issues I will gladly return and admit it.
That is actually absolutely true. If the game is causing your computer to restart it’s because it’s overheating or there’s faulty hardware. A black screen means a hardware error. Wow can’t even cause a blue screen unless it crashed a piece of hardware.
What most people don’t understand is wow works your CPU harder than any other game you will ever see. Wow can actually make your CPU hotter than a burn-in test. Because the load is only on a couple cores not spread out amongst all of the cores
And if your computer is black screening it’s not wow doing it. you’re having a hardware issue. The most likely cause of a black screen it’s your power supply is failing or the CPU is overheating. Blaming wow for your computer restarting or like you’re having black screens . is like blaming a hill for making your car stop running or overheating. They may have changed something that’s driving your computer a little harder but that’s not what is causing it to black screen it’s black screening because something is wrong just the slight increase in load caused it to black screen. And I would guess temperature is the most likely cause
while i understand what you are saying. my cpu is not over heating. I am having zero heat issues in other games. so you are saying wow can over heat my cpu in 5 minutes or 5 hours but not consistantly and cause a crash and sometimes a restart. but not show temp issues? but playing other games for 8 hours and not even a budge in temps? come on.
Wow pushes the CPU harder than any other game. For example, my CPU runs about 6 C hotter in wow than anything else i play. My laptop temps are almost 85C while playing wow . 60 to 70 playing the other games i play
It could be a lot of issues, but black screens are almost always heat or power related. Wow is very CPU dependent while most other games are not. Most other games are more GPU defendant. Meaning the CPU is more or less doing the bare minimum and the GPU is doing all the work.
My laptop does not run wow well it gets very hot but i can play most other games at max setting without issue
I’m not going to say its the CPU or GPU etc. (because I would just be guessing)
But one thing you could do is run a stress test.
Use AIDA64 or OCCT. If it bluescreens or thermal throttles, than it might be your CPU.
If nothing happens, then you could rule out your CPU.
BTW, during season 3, I experienced an issue where WoW would lockup during the loading screen and the some kind of stuttering sound from WoW would keep on playing. I couldn’t shutdown WoW and had to reboot my PC. Then during POST, my GPU would get stuck trying to access the bios on the GPU, so I had to turn off the power on my PSU and do a hard reboot to get it to boot again.
This issue was reproduce-able 100% of the time. I think I tried like more than 5 times.
I first thought my GPU was dying on me.
But it turned out to be the USB SSD which WoW was on.
I temporarily transferred the whole Blizzard game folder to a slower HDD, unplugged the SSD and booted the game. Never had the same issue again.
Its surprising how something could cause the whole PC to lock up and even cause problems during boot.
