Random PvP flagging

It’s happened twice now. While leveling alts during the Azeroth remembrance events and without Warmode being on. Engaging the boss when there is a flagged player nearby, I’ve become flagged by using AOE around them. I look at my combat log and I don’t see any damage done to anything but the boss or adds. I know it used to work this way, did it get changed back? I’m guessing it’s a bug, just found it kind of odd.

If you tap the Iron Summit guards in Searing Gorge, they will flag you for a minimum of 5 minutes of PVP, regardless of your Warmode status. That so far is the only time I’ve experienced this.

Yeah, I’ve seen that, but this was on the mini boss fights.

So you’re not flagged at all before fighting them, and then suddenly in the middle of the fight you’re being flagged? If so, that’s a new one.

Yes, that’s it exactly. I used to PvP quite a bit a long time ago, but I haven’t really ever used War Mode. :person_shrugging:

Same thing happened to me. I was fighting the Ony boss on my Enhancement Shaman, there was a flagged Alliance player and towards the end of the fight I became PvP flagged (warmode is off) . I went through my combat log and found that my Frost Shock randomly hit the PvP flagged player causing me to be flagged. I was going through my rotation and had used Chain Lightning several times before the Frost Shock hit that player. This is 100% a bug.

This bug has been a recurring issue for years. It has been hot-fixed out only to return again and again. That having been stated, it hit an all time high during Dragonflight, was never fixed, and now carries on into War Within. In olden times, even inspecting another player would flip your pvp toggle for you, regardless of your disabling it. So things are a mickle bit better these days, but far from optimum.

Remembered Hakkar, for instance, may mind control any player character, if they are attacked by or attack a player character of the opposite faction while mind controlled, there is a risk that any cleave, splash damage, spread effect, etc resulting from said attack can spread to players of the attacker’s or attacked’s faction, triggering involuntary pvp-flagging. Another joy of Remembered Hakkar is the corrupted blood debuff sometimes triggering pvp-flagging as it bounces around the Searing Gorge zone as players zoom-a-zoom-zoom mindlessly from event node to event node.

At the best of times, any group content – whether you are grouped or not – be it downing a world boss or joining the roaming murder ball that is a Superbloom comes with the risk of suddenly being flagged for pvp simply because some bad actor joins the fun and games through group finder while in war mode. You can sometimes spot them, mostly not.

Another consideration: Classes with pets are particularly at risk, because - and let us be frank here - Blizzard’s pet AI in World of Warcraft has never been great and at times has been more or less an accurate depiction of rabies. Add this to the pvp-flagging bug and you have the stuff of nightmares.

This happened to me today after the Searing Gorge event started while fighting Hogger. There was an Alliance blood DK pvp flagged. Pretty sure they were a night elf. I was on a tauren enhancement shaman.

Happening to me today on my enhancement shaman. Likely is due to frost shock chaining to flagged enemies.
