As the title says, random people are being added to the “Recent Allies” tab in the Social interface. These are players I’ve neither whispered, never grouped with, nor ever interacted with.
Several players in the immediate area around me in Dornogal were added to my Recent Allies simply by being nearby. This is detectable in real-time, as the names above anyone’s character in-game turn to bright blue when it happens ( the same color as people added to the Friends List ).
Other people are experiencing the same issue, per the replies to a previous thread in the Tech Support forum ( I was advised to make a bug report here instead ).

Are you running any RP addons, like TRP? It seems those whisper adjacent players invisibly to access the RP profiles of those players, and apparently this miserable misfeature is treating that as “meaningful contact”.

So that’s the culprit.
I don’t understand why we even need this feature. Who even asked for it and why isn’t it toggleable?
You can take the quality game design out of Blizzard, but apparently you can’t take the implementation of asinine, unwanted, useless features out of them.

I wish it was that simple. A few other people with TRP3 installed noted the same thing, which initially made me suspect this was exclusive to it. But several other people who don’t have TRP3 or any other roleplay addon are experiencing the same thing.
At the present, there’s no meaningful way to control or curate who is added to the Recent Allies. And worse, while you can opt out of your in-game location being shown, everyone on the list can see when your character is online at all times.

This just started happening for me with a server reset. Everyone in my vacinity would be tagged as a ‘friend’ and get a little icon next to their names when they said anything. Kind of annoying and there is no way to turn it off.

One cause is the “MyRolePlay” add-on. The add-on sends invisible whispers to other add-on users in order to transmit profile information that appears on the tooltip when hovering other players. These addon-specific whispers cause players you really haven’t played with to become “Recent Allies”.
I suggest:
- Please make “AddonMessages”, or those triggered by C_ChatInfo.SendAddonMessage(“MyAddon”, “some,payload,123”, “WHISPER”, “TargetName-Realm”) or C_ChatInfo.SendAddonMessageLogged(…) not trigger the “Recent Allies” addition code.
- Additionally, incoming event == “CHAT_MSG_ADDON” on the channel = “WHISPER” should also not trigger the “Recent Allies” addition.
- Please allow us to right click and remove someone from the recent allies list.
- Optional, but nice to have, allow turning off the system entirely.

Absolutely terrible feature. I’m having the same issue. I have TRP3 and I suppose that would be the culprit. It’s an incredibly invasive and useless addition they’ve made, especially since you can’t opt out of it. I don’t really want the entirety of Stormwind to know when I’m online, out and about, so on. And the yellow icon in chat is infuriating. Please, let me turn this off immediately.
