Random loot is very, very broken

So my account is a few weeks short of elder, I’ve been around for a bit, and I’ve just returned to playing frequently. As i attempt to catch back up in ilvl, doing the dailies and the weekly, I’m honestly appalled at how worthless the loot drops are.

I’m 375 atm, having trinkets that are 340-355, my shoulders are 400, other azerite pieces are 375. This week i’ve received about 10-15 literally identical drops to what I have. You name the item piece, with the exception of trinkets and i’ve gotten multiple completely useless pieces. The weekly awarded me ilvl 400 shoulders, which is exactly what i’m wearing. ANY other slot would have been an upgrade except for this one. I’ve seen 0 trinkets drop this week which is the slot i need to upgrade.

I’ve put maybe 20 hours into various things this week, with not 1 single useful drop, how is this fun? Do the devs actually think that I enjoy grinding 4 mythics to receive a 400 for THE ONLY SLOT I ALREADY HAVE ONE FOR?!?! and RNG be damned, that’s a 6% given 15 slots, I’m not that unlucky, there’s something else going on there. Everyone gets shoulders? Perhaps it can only drop head/shoulders/chest? I don’t know, but that’s a waste of my time.

Would it be gamebreaking if the game bothered to check if it was duplicating the highest ilvl slot i have before giving me loot? I’m not asking it to pick my lowest ilvl slot, just any of the slots besides the one i have a 400 for?

RNG loot has gotten out of control, I don’t need more enchanting mats, I don’t need a 10th 370 headpiece. I would like to be able to receive gear i actually need, vice having RNG troll me all week.

I know I’m not the only with this complaint, just ffs, consider fixing this!

Actually, Ion did address this at one of the more recent q&a vods.

RNG

There are a lot more viable loot acquisitions in the game outside of raiding than in the past.
The team is working on tech to make the mythic + cache at the end of the week less random.
The team is actively trying to figure out how to lessen moments that feel bad without making everything a vendor.

I just want to find some treasure chests that don’t have useless trash in them for a change… :weary:

Complaining about not getting upgrades from content that doesn’t award upgrades to your gear? I like titanforging but you’re just spoiled.

If you put those “20 hours” into mythic 6-10s or raiding you’d probably be at least 385-390…

Yeah, Treasure Chests and rares have become completely mundane in this expansion.

Honestly, dailies at your i-level shouldn’t be awarding upgrades aside from a warforge/titanforge (unless they’re the daily emissary quests).

What did you put those 20 hours into? Because if it wasn’t content with base rewards that are upgrades then I fail to see what the problem is.

I will say that less RNG in general would be welcome.

Do not think the “random” is random at all. Its a fixed “random” so you get items you already have or already have better than. For example, when you do a emissary and the reward is a piece of 370 Azerite armor. If it awards a shoulder or chest it will be an upgrade but a helmet will not be since you already have one. Nine out of ten times it gives the item you already have ( a 370 Helmet).

I don’t know about that. I’ve geared 3 characters so far and I’ve had the opposite happen to me on all of them. Yes, I got a duplicate here and there, but for the most part when it came to my azerite gear emmisary quests I generally got the piece that needed an upgrade. So much so that I assumed that there was an algorithm in place that was helping ensure it and was suitably impressed with Blizzard.

Please make everything a vendor.

Vendors are much better than RNG chests. RNG chests make me hopeless not hopeful. They demotivate and burn out. Vendors present clear goal and clear sense of choice.

I want to reach the state when I don’t get any rewards. That means that I’m done and rightfully so, instead of artificially limiting myself or hoping to get that one slot that I need.

You know that is all well and good… but we’re what… 8 months into this expansion. The loot system has been in place since Legion… and they’re ‘now just going to look into fixing it?’…

This game is so damn broke it isn’t even funny.

I know about it. Ran nine 120’s today on the Order of embers emissary in Drustvar. All nine of them got an Azerite piece for the one slot they already had a better item in, when the reward would have been an upgrade in either of the other two slots. Some were helmets, some shoulders, some chests. While the pieces were random based on which of the three it gave, all nine were were the one of the three I already had. This also has happened on many other emissaries over the past two months. Same thing happens on Warfronts each cycle.

Well, I doubt they will give back vendors, hopefully we can move to a point where there won’t be 3 of the same piece of gear, with the same stat in a row.

The problem I have for loot is that you have no control over just about anything. You can get a perfectly itemized piece then get a titanforged piece that is the wrong secondaries affecting gameplay but you do more damage or healing despite that.

only my horde DH has been liked by RNG. She is the first, and only, to break 390 off gear found open world in the RNG games there lol. 1 out of 5 120’s…not the best success story ever told.

Gets real bad some chars. LIke one char has a trash cloak I cannot lose for love nor money lol.

Ive had that very thing happen on so many characters now. Ive had a ton of time to play this week. On my mage I got 3 WANDS, voldunai emissary weapon cache, weekly x4mythic chest, and an invasion reward. On my shamans, multiple boots even though I got lucky and got 400 boots weeks ago. Since then, doesn’t fail. Almost every day when I log in to check WQs for any upgrades, boots boots boots boots, Do LFR? boots, do a mythic+? boots, weekly mythic chest? boots.

The amount of time that this has happened makes me want to put my tinfoil hat on.

Someone at blizzard knew about this. It was placed in the game specifically to draw out the time played metric.

You know about YOUR experience, yes. But mine is clearly different from yours. Which doesn’t make either of us wrong.

I still would prefer to get rid of the excessive RNG though, so I agree with you on that.

Treasure chests lol. Those are just full of belly button lint now.

Ion is dead set against vendors because they make loot come too fast

Yet vendors generate the highest player satisfaction levels

Clearly player satisfaction isn’t valued…

there were vendors in legion. they just gave low ilevel stuff like valor did. i cannot recall ever having a vendor that gave you heroic or mythic level stuff you could buy with valor. it was always normal raid tier.
