Rain of fire for single target?

I saw the DPS tierlist discussion from Maximum and the Warlock he brought on said that Chaos Bolt and Shadowburn are so bad that we want to use Rain of Fire for single target. I know this was true in Beta when Diabolist would use RoF to dump shards to summon demons faster, but this no longer works and now CB and SB deal much more damage than RoF.

Is there something im missing? Could this be due to some Hellcaller thing?

No you’re not missing anything.

We aren’t playing diabolist this raid tier with current tuning, and will most likely be hellcaller for all content.

What this means is that blizzard fixed the DPET (Damage per execute time) of rain of fire for diabolist (mostly through touch of rancorra increasing the cast time of chaos bolt speed/reducing the amount it contributes to diabolist pets).

For hellcaller, it’s always been close, and as it stands you can cast a rain of fire + incinerate in the time it would take you to chaos bolt. This means that the DPET of chaos bolt (1 chaos bolt button press) is slightly lower than hitting rof + incinerate at the same time. There’s a longer explanation, but that’s the scoop atm.

EDIT: I’ll add the talent import code here if you’re interested to see what the destruction tree would look like if you were to eliminate chaos bolt from your rotation:

CsQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAmZmZmZEziBmtZmZYWmNzwMmFzyMWMzAAAAAzMzssMzsMjFYgZxoxMAmtYDDAAAAAAAjxMAA

Context: Right now we’re figuring out APL and sim requirements for destruction and once the dust settles, we’ll see whether Demonfire Infusion is actually increasing the stock DPET of incinerate to the point where it’s useable. If I had to guess, after the readjustment of the talent and bugfix, it most likely isn’t useable at all, and we’ll go back to the standard channel demonfire.

In reality, you most likely won’t be playing pure st rof build since almost no fights in the game are pure st, and havoc and mayhem were buffed pretty heavily this ptr cycle. The problem is that the implication that this is the case for destruction, shows a serious lack of planning and foresight by the designers.

The easiest fix the combat team can do is to simply decrease the cast time of chaos bolt, and slightly increase it’s damage. This would nullify our ability to squeeze in a single gcd ability in rof + a casted ability in the same amount of time as a single chaos bolt.
