I think a lot of casual players may find themselves in this situation:
Can’t raise IO score because can’t get into groups for 9+ keys. Can’t get into 9+ key groups, because IO score is too low.
Also, if your not playing the meta/fotm class, its even more difficult to get into groups for higher keys.
It seems to be a vicious circle, and worse, people who don’t have dedicated groups are essentially locked out of 226 gear, because Raider IO or blizzard’s failure to balance classes effectively locks them out of M+ content.
I’m not sure what the answer is, but as an AFF lock with 203 ilvl and 500 IO score, (cause I don’t have a dedicated group and have to pug everything), its kinda ruining the game for me.
I’m not sure if the problem is raider IO or blizzards failure to balance classes to make all classes and specs viable in each form of endgame content.
Update:
Got some good advice, and a couple of dumb comments, overall not so bad.

Ah the joys of M+. Players keep insisting this was “best feature” to ever be added to the game!

i don’t do much M+. i am raising my IO now. I can get into +9 just fine, but not into +10 yet. in a week or so I should be able to get +10.

Hey, I ain’t your shield. Fight your own battles.
If only there were keys below 9+… Just work your IO score up just like everyone else, find a guild that doesn’t care or be a tank/healer.

So you’re in a guild and you cant find 4 people to run a dungeon with?

I can’t really say much on your issues. You are hardcore compared to how I currently play. I’m still working on hitting the level cap.

so… people are casually doing 9+ keys already?
how many groups are declining because io vs other reasons?
but as far as io goes, you could work on raising your lower keys up to a 7-8 or push your own key.
would you rather people based their decisions off ilvl, because that already seems to be the “casual” determining factor, followed by loot stacking. or group comp.
for loot stacking, a key holder may want a group of mostly the same armor class and of a much higher ilvl than the loot that drops so you, as the key holder, are more likely to get traded items.
io is less of a casual thing imo.

Yup. I see people asking for 190+ item level for mythic 0. I mean think bout it 190 item level for 183 loot or whatever it is.

That’s like saying you can’t get a job as a CEO right out of High School.
How about build your IO score from the ground up? Apply for lower keys to build up your score and keep going higher each time.

if it wasn’t IO it would be something else.

So…
I’m of multiple minds on this one but…
Your score can go up just running low keys. And no one cares about your score in those keys.
Once you hit the higher keys frankly… you are better off having a static group that you run together with than trusting raider io. Even if you were to recruit only very high scored people there, in higher keys you need tight team coordination and a PUG is just a bad idea.
I’d rather take a core group of low skill but try hard and willing to discuss and listen players, start in low keys, and work our way up together, than trust high score people, even if they were carrying me for free.
Building that solid team over time - that’s really the way to do it.
Raider io exists for people who have had no luck building a static. And a smart user of it will rapidly ‘get off the wagon’ as soon as they identify some teammates who will join them on a regular basis and who share the same mindset over how to approach the game.
Use it to build your team, don’t use it to stay in the PUG-life.

raider io is only relevant if you want to pug the non trivial keys. At which point you should probably just join a guild that will provide you people to group with. This is a social game, so be social. raider io like it or not is the byproduct of bad pug experiences.

While your example is true. I have just as good of a chance as winning the lottery as this would be to happen.
Real solution. Remove raider IO and add a actual que system for mythics

Yeah. It used to be gearscore. And at times its been warcraftlogs. And before both of these back when cross server groups didn’t exist folks kept lists of who was ‘good’ or ‘bad’ on that server.
At the end of the day… if you want to avoid this drama, look for some fellow ‘entry skill’ players and build a team, a team of people willing to wipe together until they learn to sync together. And then rank up together and don’t even care anymore if your score if high or low because you and your mates are still getting together at the usual times that week.
Use the PUG tool if you don’t know anybody, to find some bodies.
THAT is my real point here. Stop PUGing. Build a team. In multiple MMOs I’ve always gone furthest when I started with teammates who were full of fail, but willing to work on improving.
I’ve always been blocked when we recruited ‘heroes’ with high rankings, who would invariably leave when we weren’t doing it their way or they saw that folks were still gelling or learning.

Mythic+ is one of the best features they’ve added to the game. It’s an alternative way to gear up in a 5 man atmosphere vs. raiding. It’s spammable. It’s quick. It’s puggable. It keeps dungeons relevant.
You’ve got a chip on your shoulder.

I’m pretty sure casual players can join guilds and form their own groups.

no.
your score only goes up if you complete something higher than you completed or faster than you completed. running the same +5 necrotic wake 50 time will not raise your score.
’d rather take a core group of low skill but try hard and willing to discuss and listen players,
Whenever I pug 10s, about one out of 5 DPS reliably interrupts… a 16 years old mechanic, present in pvp and pve, core function of the game… yet the vast majority of DPSer cant be bothered to interrupt.
Your optimism in PuG ability to learn even basic strategies concern me… using HoA first boss as an exemple, either you notice the puddle on your first time fighting him and figure out that stacking them together is the way to go… or you dont care about mechanic, let them land wherever you please, then complain about not having anywhere to run. theres very little room to explain anything.
