Did my first speed-run of Sunken Temple last night. It was actually a blast! It completely revitalized my sense of engagement with the content and has me excited for the next raid to see if we can improve on pulls and get a better time.
This brings me to wonder - perhaps SoD, or whatever comes after SoD, should enshrine a raid speed-running as an actual mechanic of the game. I can see content having much, much longer legs if you continue to have a motivation to get stronger and better at the content once you’ve already cleared it. SoD raids will always be cleared week 2 by decent guilds, that probably isn’t changing, but if speed-running was official, I think many more players would engage that content and have fun with it.
M+ was a smash-hit that is the best feature of Retail WoW. A timed mechanic in SoD could similarly give the raids longevity comparable to M+.
Just my two cents after having a great time in ST last night.
As long as it’s optional and there are ways besides this to earn things I’m all for it. Personally I hate timers. Always stayed away from Mythic plus and just did raids.
I think if they were to do something like that, it should just reward vanity items/titles. Gating bis gear behind, for example, a 30 or 20min ST run feels kind of wrong and would just push most people further away.
You’re right though, it does make it a lot more fun/engaging
Exactly. Bronze clear time = toy. Silver clear time = tabard. Gold clear time = mount. Then we can simply have a leaderboard or title for the group with the best time etc. EZ Clap.
Competitive Speed Run PVE would likely have a larger following then the total failure-to-launch-despite-all-the-wasted-resources trying to make arenas into a LOLe$PORTLOL.
They actually did that with Undead Strat. I don’t hate the idea of killing a boss in X minutes gets you an extra reward. Save the hostage type stuff.
I like speedrunning, but I don’t see a need to put it in for raids as times already get put up on WCL.
I wouldn’t really want any timers for 5 mans. I like to go fast, but as a tank it’ll just encourage more bad dps to overpull/act stupid. Everyone thinks they’re a pro, but most aren’t lol
I didn’t even really know this was a fun thing because of all of the dooming from Andies about it and lack of a natural bridge into the content.
I didn’t even know the guild I was in wanted to do speed runs. Guild leader just decided that’s what we were doing and we did it and had fun.
By the same argument you can say you don’t need rewards to PvP and that’s true but it’s certainly more natural to get into with rewards existing.
Of course. Of course. I totally vibe with the whole “have a beer and do the raid in a chill manner” type of vibe. That’s how I played phases 1 and 2 and was playing phase 3 up until the first time I tried speed-running. I wouldn’t want to ruin that at all.
It is fun, and it’s one of the things I’m personally looking forward to. I was in a guild that did Naxx in 1:09 and it’s one of the cooler things I remember from classic. I think the only reason we kept raiding was to speedrun since you can always get a better time.
There’s also the side effect that if you kill things really, really quick it’s really easy to get a good parse, if you’re into that sort of thing.
I’ve played vanilla/classic since forever and I just got into speed running this phase. It is one of the most fun things I’ve done. It’s really fun trying to beat your previous week time. I think everyone should try it at some point.
