so I’m trying to complete the transmog sets for the raid (every difficulty) and I am happy to use the crucible to do so if needed - when it comes to the crucible though will any item in the ilvl range of the relevant raid work? or does it have to be from the raid itself? for example can I get a cloak from world content, bump it up to 400ilvl and change it into the Aberrus LFR cloak?
I’m thinking you mean the catalyst not crucible? Short answer, yes.
Long answer: The only open world content that will work for the catalyst is the suffused gear from Fyrakk assaults and upgraded scalewarden world pvp gear (requires bloody token / trophies of strife). It’s possible to convert gear from low mythics or an item from LFR itself, also.
I just did some tests. I already knew when I upgraded LFR or veteran suffused pieces to 415 (the base champion threshold) I was getting normal appearances for the raid sets. I had an adventurer-grade suffused piece, but even upgrading it to 402 would not allow me to convert it in the catalyst, so it must need to be classified as veteran or above. I believe I’ve seen some champion suffused pieces, but it’s random.
I also went to check out a veteran 402 ilvl cloak from a +2, and it looks like it will give the LFR appearance. So, the veteran level from those sources below 415 should convert to LFR for you.
The upgrade scalewarden gear is 411 in PvE, but 447 in battlegrounds. It looks like that set is giving the normal appearance, and since you can’t convert it at the lower ilvl, it only gives normal.
TL;DR:
- LFR, veteran suffused, and veteran mythic gear (402-411) will convert to LFR; upgrade it to 415 and it becomes normal
- Normal (champion) gear (415-424) upgraded to 428 will give the heroic appearance
- Heroic (hero) gear (428-437) upgraded to 441 should give mythic
- Upgraded scalewarden PvP gear (411) converts to normal
I use the Can I Mog It? addon and it lists the appearance per set, so i’m able to tell what it will convert to in the catalyst preview without actually doing it. You are not able to get this info from the upgrade vendor preview pane.
They’ve stated eventually they will allow free conversions of season 1 gear for transmog at the catalyst, but it doesn’t appear to have been added yet. It’s possible that will be added for this season as well eventually.

Can you catalyze the Honor PvP gear? If so, which appearance do you get?
I just went to check. The ilvl 366 obsidian aspirant gear didn’t seem to be eligible to convert in the catalyst. The unranked conquest gear can be converted to tier, but doesn’t look like it changes the transmog from the gladiator set to the raid set. I’ve seen bug reports mentioning that isn’t how it usually works, though, and may be unintended.
