Hey Blizzard team,
First off, I want to say how much I’m loving Season of Discovery so far. The fresh approach to classic content and the focus on experimentation has been a blast. That said, I wanted to ask if you’ve considered adding Raid Markers and the Ping System from retail WoW into SoD and Classic+ :).
Here’s why I think it would be a great fit:
-
Better Communication for Everyone: Not every group uses voice chat, and relying on text can be clunky, especially during fights. Markers and pings would make it so much easier to communicate things like priority targets, positioning, or calling out mechanics. It would also make the game more accessible to players who prefer not to or can’t use voice comms.
-
Supports Discovery and Learning: Since SoD is all about figuring things out, tools like these could help players share what they’re learning in real time. Whether it’s marking a key mob or pinging where a mechanic needs to happen, it’d make coordinating in this new content more fun and less frustrating.
-
Fits the Challenging Content: SoD’s fights are a step up in complexity compared to old-school classic, which I love. But having tools like markers and pings would help groups handle those mechanics better, things like positioning players, or identifying safe spots on the fly.

It’s Proven to Work in Retail: These tools are a huge help in retail WoW, and I think SoD players would really appreciate them too. They’d add convenience without taking away from the classic vibe.
Best they can do is probably the smoke flares, which at this point in WoW’s time would likely need to use the code from Hunter’s Flare.
…people seem to forget that even though it’s the Retail client, it’s still running in a ‘compatibility mode’ to “make it work” with the older ways the game worked.
Pretty good example of this ‘compatibility mode’ is, /castrandom doesn’t really work but /cast [known: spellID] does; ‘castrandom’ is from Wrath post-3.2 and ‘cast known’ is from DF, I believe.
What they would need to do is make skill books, one for each marker color (ie skull is white, ‘x’ is red, etc). Add those to the ‘General Tab’ (all though they could add another tab ‘Markers’ like they added ‘Runes’ for the currently active runes).
…then leave it up to the players to decide who uses them. Because adding in logic to check if you’re leader/assist would be difficult, and I’m honestly not even sure if it could be done - I suppose an ‘if’ to check your group permission (leader/assist) could be used. But I’d just say to let the players handle it.
Even if we don’t get raid markers, the ping system would be fine. They could use the existing worlds coordinate system to determine the ping location and add a visual for it . I just find myself wanting to use it all the time. If it can’t be done, it can’t be done. But does not hurt to ask.
Only ‘ping system’ I’m familiar with is clicking on the minimap. But, then again, I haven’t played since Legion, and even then it was solo; so never a point to explore any ‘group communication tools’.
They have a new on in Retail that shows a pin on the 3D map. Its super nice actually. Just came out in Dragonflight.
