Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT review out!

So I guess now we sit and wait while the scalpers do their beta testing, right?

I’m still sticking with 3080. Even though I can’t buy it :joy:

I don’t really care about ray tracing but DLSS really intrigued me. My guess is fidelityFX super resolution is not going to help performance much. You just create performance without silicon.

So, similar performance. $50 extra for DLSS? Sold!

My guess is the fidelityFX super resolution going to use CPU and that’s where the infinity cache and SAM actually came in. A highway lane between CPU and GPU. And AMD typically already have cpu core idle for games because how many core they have. Not that the FFSS(I guess?) is going to be proprietary but it’s going to be terrible if you don’t use all AMD. And I’m not upgrading cpu right now.

I agree. Nvidia is still more of a premium package. Typically more solid drivers too. Im still on a RTX 2080 OC to high heck and im happy with it. Will move to the 3080 as soon as I can easily get one. I am guessing February

I haven’t seen the reviews yet, but I hope they’re good, because I really want to go AMD for my GPU because of Hackintosh. (Wish Apple and Nvidia would just come to terms or something though…)

This generation that’s not the case. Reference cards are cheap and near unobtainable. You have to go with aftermarket.

Neon Noir doesn’t have the draw calls of WoW Ashran. Like I said if you play the handful of games with RT then go for the 3080 over a 6800xt. At most other points the 6800xt is going to be the better buy.

That’s because you ignore Nvidia problems.
Dithering problems are still happening on Nvidia cards for a decade. Nvidia isn’t any better than AMD with their list of problems:

-Nvidia 1K and 2K series cards catching on fire:
-Ampere stability issues.
-Nvidia admits color banding and lower image quality problems on Nvidia cards
-Hairworks bug

Just to list a few.

I’d hold off. Supposedly newer cards from Nvidia are in the works. If those rumors are true then a 3080 TI (?) card with 12GB VRAM might be far more desirable than either a 3090 or 3080.

Problem is it seems we’re 3 months off on top of every release. So if 12gb 3080ti cards come out in 3 months, add 3 more months for real availability then we’re at half a year away.

All this stuff is frustrating not being able to actually get stuff.

My understanding is a good portion of people who are actually getting 3070/3080s are getting them in person at places like microcenter, meanwhile i have nothing like that even close, and i’m at the mercy of bots.

Best buy is getting the reference 3070/3080/3090s from Nvidia. The reference cards are some of the best Ampere has to offer and still priced at MSRP.

The smaller skews are easier to produce and might not be as bad with inventory in the future (RTX 3060s and RX 6700 cards). Time will tell though.

I too want a Microcenter :frowning: .

Have been scouring their website since launch day without even a passing hint of local availability on the 3080 or 3070.

I’d get it right now if it was up. At present they are listed “online only.”

6800 XT is only a better buy if you don’t need RT and some other features like video codec. If there is streaming involved, its automatic avoid 6800 XT. AMD video codec is trash.

Still going. If I see more of game breaking issues, I would’ve said it. Even myself bumped into AMD driver issues but that was long time ago. I still see a lot more complaints on AMD cards.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/radeon-big-navi-driver-issues-fix

Even the famous black screen issue causing people to switch to Nvidia is there. Let’s wait a a few month and see where AMD driver team fares.

Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I have 4 AMD GPUs in my house with no problems

It might not be that long. Technically nvidia already manufacturing the 3080 ti chips. Since would most likely just the same chip as the 3080 and 3090. Just different binning. Nvidia could actually bin 3090 capable chip into a 3080 ti just to combat 6900TX for availability.

The other supply constraints is the GDDR6X. But if they reduce 3090 production with less ram model that they could make more card with it.

This is just hypothetical of course.

https://youtu.be/ZtxrrrkkTjc?t=749

6800XT
1080p -> 6800XT is on par with a 3090
1440p -> 6800XT is 3% faster than a 3080
4K -> 6800XT is 5% slower than a 3080

All of this while consuming 20-30% less power, 45% more VRAM and cheaper. Games that need less VRAM (ie like WoW) is where the 6800XT excels. When more of the VRAM is needed the cache misses take place.

This is the part that needs to be quoted. Video card streaming are for people who don’t have dedicated hardware for streaming (external or extra CPU cores). An article below explains why:

https://blog.mobcrush.com/boost-your-stream-quality-choose-the-right-encoder-243fb685d3b8

…the reality is that x264 looks better than both NVENC and AMF when given enough power to do its job.

That’s because you’re looking for AMD problems and ignoring Nvidia problems. I gave you several past and even present problems with Nvidia drivers and you’ve said:

Here’s an Nvidia blue screen crash and associated fix:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/support-hardware/FIXED-Watchdog-DPC-Violation-Error-with-Multiple-NVIDIA-GPUs-1158/

The error keeps popping up from time to time:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/geforce-graphics-cards/5/313415/blue-screen-on-windows-dpc-watchdog-violation/?topicPage=1

You can ignore Nvidia problems all you want, doesn’t mean the problems don’t exist. I’ve had both cards, it’s not rosy on either side.

This much I agree. The main reason to get a 3080 is if you have a game that runs acceptable RT perf on a 3080.
In reality right now it’s a matter of get whatever is in stock.

Check out this review. Benchmarks for WOW at 1:29, and 3080 is better for WOW across all resolutions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tx_EJu2558&feature=emb_logo

Love me some Tech YES City!

When I sit at a tech forums everyday, those are the ones I see.

Like I said earlier, let’s wait and see how AMD driver team fares in upcoming months.

Comparing 1080p with high end cards is a good laugh. Those percentages can be shrugged off.

Yup. Pretty sure I said how good is the power consumption.

WoW still favors Nvidia by the way.

That will depends on the user. If they have good enough CPU.

Again that’s because you’re not looking at Nvidia problems and even when Nvidia employees point out 10 year old problems you simply ignored it.

Tell that to the people playing with 240hz monitors.

So the 6800 difference is ‘shrugged off’ all of the sudden interesting.

Sucks for those people? What do you want me to say?

You’re living in the past. Shadowlands favors AMD Navi2.

Without ray tracing, the exact opposite is true.

Without raytracing the 6800 XT locks horns with the 3090 at 4K:

We need more reviews. Those 2 reviews are giving completely conflicting benchmarks (like polar opposites). I don’t know which to believe.

See what you need. 1440p or 4k? 6800 XT is better for 1440p, RTX 3080 is better for 4k for now. 16GB from 6800 XT may be better for 4k in the future.

Video codec and Ray Tracing is obviously RTX 3080. Nothing else. Don’t listen to people finding loopholes. Just see what general public complains more.
