Racial Traits in World of Warcraft: A Community Discussion

Hello fellow players,

As we all know, the racial traits in World of Warcraft add a unique flavor to each race, offering various passive bonuses and niche active abilities that give personality to our characters. The balance of these traits has often been a topic of discussion within our community. With the upcoming changes to human racials and the eventual adjustment of Dractyr’s racial traits in The War Within, I believe now would be a good time for an overall refresh on racial traits for most races. I’d like to open up a discussion on how Blizzard could improve the feeling while keeping things balanced.

Current State of Racial Traits

Racial traits are mostly done with the same recipe for every race.

  1. A combat-utility racial
  2. A damage-output racial
  3. A sprinkle of flavor racials which come in various form

Let’s take dwarf as an example:

  1. Stoneform is the combat-utility racial
  2. Might of the mountain is the damage-increase racial (2% crit damage)
  3. Frost resistance and explorer are flavor racials

Sometimes the combat-utility is passive, like for Orc:

  1. Blood Fury is the damage-output racial
  2. Hardiness is combat-utility
  3. Command is flavor (and niche output, but 1% only on pet damage is minuscule)

If you want to see for yourselves, here are all the racial traits in the current game, I invite you to look for the racial trait page on wowpedia.

Outliers and suggestions

First of all, I would like to note that the damage-output part of racial traits is very minor and irrelevant to your performance as a player. In my opinion, they are balanced enough as is. In this post I am mostly concerned about making every combat-utility racial traits feel good.

Now it is well known that some utility racials are just superior in end-game content. For example, Stoneform and Shadowmeld are very useful abilities in many situations and they feel very good when used at the right time. In comparison, Regeneratin’ (ZTroll) and Arcane Pulse (Nightborne) are mostly unimpactful
I think combat-utility racials are at their best when they can occasionally provide some unique, powerful utility.

So here is a short list of racial abilies which are, in my opinion, not good enough:

Gift of the naaru (Draenei)

  • Heals the target (any friendly) for 20% of their total health over 5 sec.
  • Instant and does not trigger the global cooldown
  • 3 min cooldown
The healing could be cranked up a bit, maybe 30% would make it more competitive. It is not a bad ability but the cooldown is high and not justified.

Darkflight (Worgen)

  • Activates your true form, increasing movement speed by 40% for 10 sec.
  • 2 min cooldown
This is just a normal speed boost and lack flavor. Maybe adjust it so it gives a stronger movement speed boost but for a shorter period of time (150% for 3s) and use the running wild animation while we’re at it to give it some needed flavor?

Spatial Rift (Void elf)

  • Tear a rift in space. Reactivate this ability to teleport through the rift.
  • The rift lasts 6s
  • 3 min cooldown
Situational but useful in PvP and for some mechanics in PvE. The rift moves quite slowly and only last 6s. I think making the rift last 8s or putting the ability off the global cooldown would make it much more usable. I also think the cooldown could be 2 min

Light’s Judgment (Lightforged Draenei)

  • Call down a strike of Holy energy on a target, dealing (Attack power * 6.25) Holy damage to enemies within 5 yards after 3 sec.
  • 2.5 min cooldown
Lightforged lack any combat-utility racials. Their only active is Light’s Judgment which actually deal good damage but on a long-ish cooldown. What would you add to this race to make them more competitive?

Arcane Pulse (Nightborne)

  • Deals (Attack power * 0.5) Arcane damage to nearby enemies and reduces their movement speed by 50%. Lasts 12 sec.
  • Only triggers half a global cooldown
  • 3 min cooldown
In a world where almost every class has access to slows, and where even AoE slows are also pretty common, this ability is kind of superfluous. The damage is negligible, which is fine because nightborne has another damage-output racial, but the utility is not good enough to justify a 3 min cooldown. Either lower the cooldown a lot, or add a short knockup so it can be used to interrupt enemies?

Mag’har Orc
This allied race has no real combat-utility racial. Savage blood, which reduce the duration of Poisons, Diseases and Curses by 10%, does nothing in 99% scenarios, PvP and PvE. It’s just flavor at this point. They also have a 10% bonus to pet health which I also consider to be flavor only.

Regeneratin’ (Zandalari Troll)

  • Regenerate 100% of your maximum health over 6 sec, interrupted by damage.
  • 2.5 min cooldown
This ability is unusable in its current state. The moments you need healing are also the moments you are taking damage. Unless you can reliably get away from attackers, get rid of every damage over time effects on you and avoid any AoE damage while you sit there channeling for 6s, you will NEVER get good value out of this. I think DoT damage should not break the channel. Hell I think it should just not break on damage at all. Personnally, I would reduce the channel time back to 4s, and make it heal less when taking damage instead of breaking.

Not combat-utility racials, but I believe those should be looked at too

Embrace the Loa (Zandalari Troll)

  • Choose your Loa by making an offering to Loa Shrines around the world.
Each Loa offers unique powers. Guards in Dazar’alor will tell you where Shrines can be found.
I think this passive should be looked at. Some Loa buffs are very undertuned and pretty much unusable (Embrace of Akunda, Embrace of Kimbul, Embrace of Krag’wa).
Also, I think there should be an animation for the different effects. Right now there are none at all. Embrace of Pa’ku proc could do some cool effect like a roaring pterrordax sound or something.
The flavor of this racial is amazing, but I think the effects could be more interesting.

Pterrordax swoop (Zandalari Troll)

  • Reduces your falling speed for 2 min.
  • 15 min cooldown
This acts like a Goblin glider but on its own cooldown. It’s pretty cool and flavorful, but the cooldown is waaay too long for what it does! Reduce this to 2 min please! Or even better, reduce it to like 5 min and make it usable in instanced content as a way to avoid knockbacks and fall damage!

Epicurean (Pandaren)

  • Increases the stat benefits from food by 100%
This is the damage-output racial for Pandaren. To enhance its usefulness and uniqueness, I suggest that it also allows the Well Fed food buff to persist through death. This change would make the trait more interesting and practical, eliminating the need to constantly reapply food buffs after each death to fully benefit from the Pandaren racial.

Conclusion

I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts and suggestions on this topic. How do you feel about the current state of racial traits? What changes would you like to see if any?

Lights Judgement does so little damage at max level that it isn’t worth the GCD to press.

The biggest problems for me with current racials is the power of stoneform and shadowmeld as I don’t feel racials should be as powerful and more a flavor thing.

There’s definitely a bunch of useless ones that should be reworked like darkspear troll regenerating and beastlaying or dwarf explorer but I don’t feel they need to buff a lot of them maybe lightforged a bit but the biggest offender is nightborne for physical damage dealers because it only buff magical dmg.

Maghar racial is also only bad because you can compare it to stoneform. Void elf racial has its utility, draenei and worgen racial are still pretty decent.

I feel like this is mostly because most classes/specs that want something like Stoneform or Shadowmeld don’t have it.

A good comparison is Worgen with a 40% speed boost being nothing to sneeze at, but practically every class in the game has a speed boost of that or higher so it’s not exactly gamebreaking.

Yea it’s definitely better for classes that lacks movement, but a 40% boost is still always useful I feel even if not “gamebreaking” which is not my wish for racials to be personally.

I completely agree with the sentiment that racials should be tame. Just niche utilities that feel good to use when the situation demands it.

Stoneform/Fireblood and Shadowmeld are probably too good because they both offer a rare and game changing effect (full self dispel, combat vanish).

While I don’t know what they should do with those, I’m personnaly most concerned with making all racials feel good to use.

Darkflight is fine at 40% 10s, I just think it would feel better as a shorter, more impactful burst of speed to make them stand out a bit.

In terms of competitive nature it only effects the ppl who are in world first races , anybody else complaining about that are either wannabies , pretenders , time wasters and trolls (not the race :rage:) .

Now with that out of the way - quality of life and almost every race has one garbage racial trait , like
-Resistances of 1% .
-Ability to use hearthstone twice
-1 % pet damage

so on , some also don’t make sense

Make a camp for vulepra ?? does this mean no other race are capable of making camps or did Blizzard ran out of ideas to give Vulperas something unique like pacifist- act cute and other guy won’t attack you for 5 secs , who cares if break pvp , PVP IS ALREAYD GARBAGE

Yeah those combat-useless traits are just for flavor
1% resistance
Profession perks
XP bonuses, etc.

In my opinion, as long as the race has its output racial and a fun, usable utility racial with a reasonable cooldown, we’re good!

Personally, I don’t give a damn about the damage-output racial, they are very minor, but people do care about at least having one and that’s understandable.

make a camp is pretty useful if you’re into collecting, just drop a camp wherever the thing you’re camping is and you can teleport back there on an hour cd.

Crafting racials are absolutely busted because of the way crafting variance works and the ability to create higher quality components with lower quality reagents.

Crafting racials seem to get overlooked because people just think about how the end product can ultimately be produced by anyone willing to burn insight but in reality they’re more busted than any of the combat racials.

I’m all about buffing weak racials, not sure about all the takes in this thread though.

Tail swipe and wing buffet combined give any dracthyr 2 AOE stops. This is arguably the most busted race in the game.

Meld is strong, but do you really see people using meld outside of high pvp or m+ to good value? The situations that make it very valuable in combat are limited to levels of play few people who post here will ever play at.

Remember, you’re nerfing something, it nerfs it for everyone. No one is doing meld skips in a +10. No one is meld juking chaos bolts in 1700.

Dwarf racial is very strong in that it’s just so universally applicable. There is no dungeon where a self purge isn’t very good and it’s good at all skill levels, unlike meld.

We need to be pretty careful when discussing things like buffing arcane torrent. It should be pretty obvious that giving the most popular race an AOE silence might have some absurd outcomes.

Yes there is skills to use stuff right, but stuff being broken at a high end level is also a valid reason to balance. It’s not because surrender to madness was only busted in Legion if you were a top player that it’s fine if spriest did 10-20% more damage than most people when using it right.

Being able to skip mechanics imo in dungeons with feign death effects personally shouldn’t work (which is something they did for raids since WoD), skips are not personally my issue with it. I don’t really want to argue too much about pvp as I don’t pvp much anymore.

Agreed, Dractyr’s knocks will get changed/moved over to Evoker for sure when they get access to other classes actually, that was confirmed by Blizzard

Yeah I think arcane torrent is fine as an aoe dispel, that’s why I didn’t put it in the original post! It’s actually a well designed racial. It’s good in some niche situations, allows classes without an offensive purge to have one occasionally and restores resource otherwise. It feels good to use imo!

Only thing I would change about it is the resource generation because it is inconsistent for some specs

I’m not sure going after meld because a few people who play at the MDI level can pull off skips will really offset the backlash from 99% of night elves who use it to mount when stuck in combat.

They could just change the way it works in dungeons to transfer your aggro to a party member regardless of state so that the skip doesn’t work, or put meld skips into the MDI rules with limits governing their use.

It’s the ability to cancel boss abilities in dungeons that I feel goes too far, I feel skips are more a niche thing that aren’t as strong.

If you use one of those abilities in raid you will still get hit by the ability and the boss won’t just cancel it and do nothing for a while.

Racials need a rework. A lot of races have functionally worthless racials. A race with +1% haste? You will never feel like that racial has an impact, it’s just there to exist, to say “look, we’re slightly faster, that’s our thing!” Which is fine, but it’s also functionally worthless.

I’d personally rather have the options to choose from multiple-varying themes for each race. We’re going to be seeing lightbound undead in TWW. If Lightbound ever became new customization options, the current Forsaken racial abilities would make absolutely no sense, but allowing people to choose a loadout with abilities which were thematically appropriate to a lightbound undead would make perfect sense. The same goes for the Blue and Red draenei variants having unique racial loadouts for each one.

This issue also affects classes as well. For example, a Gnome Warrior thematically might not care about Expansive Mind if they want to be a dumb fighter type (no offense Warriors), and they get nothing out of Engineering Specialization if they don’t take engineering. So, a Gnome could find themselves in a situation where their racials don’t match the identity they’re going for. Not all Gnomes are going to be brilliant scientists, some are going to be rough-and-tumble fighters and their racial abilities should reflect that. Same goes for Humans and Diplomacy or Human Spirit. Humans aren’t all going to be super positive and nice people, some are going to be dark and dour and their racial abilities should reflect that as well. Imagine you’re a Human Rogue or Warlock and your passive is effectively “super nice person that everyone loves”, that might fit with Priests or Warriors or Paladins, but it doesn’t serve all identities.

Also, instead of always releasing new allied races, we could simply get new customization options with a new racial loadout, so, you’d functionally still be a Gnome Warrior, but your sub race would be Rock Gnome or what ever. This would give established characters and players new options, which they do want, and it’d also allow for new diverse character identities.

I think I was all over with this post, so if anyone makes sense of it, good job. But this is what I’d like to see happen.

There I am Gary!

My hot take is that Fireblood is balanced because it’s both combat utility and DID’s damage racial, meaning that if you’re using it for damage, you can’t use it for utility and vice versa.

Whereas Stoneform is entirely defensive, the situations where you’d want something like a Cleanse are typically the same situations where 10% DR is pretty good, absolute worst case scenario is you’ve got 10% DR which isn’t exciting but it’s solid.

You could probably just remove the 10% DR off it and it’d still be really good, it’d just be situational.

Shadowmeld is kinda weird because the racial is so insanely polarised. In 95% of cases, the racial is super weak with it’s only real use case being dropping combat against something you don’t care about fighting.

But in the other 5% of cases it’s gamebreaking in super weird and often unintuitive ways like how someone not targeted by Rezan can use it to cancel his focus mechanic.

Shadowmeld has been countered before by mobs being immune to it. Stoneform is fine. Blizz thinks the same, so much so that they gave it to a second race.

Neither are a problem.

And you don’t do that by screwing over a racial. You do it by countering the racial in high end content if it’s that much of an issue.

Where was this confirmed?

Exactly. :slightly_smiling_face:

That and if it actually breaks stuff (which is rare, but there’s precedent) is they can just change the debuff you’re cleansing to not be cleansable by Stoneform like they did for SLG in Nathria.

I haven’t seen confirmation but there’s zero shot that when Dracthyr opens up to other classes they won’t change how their racials work. Probably make Wing Buffet/Tail Swipe either have their CD increased or you only get 1 as a non-Evoker.

Exactly! Content can be adjusted to account for racials. The racials themselves don’t need screwed over.

Me either. Which is why I was curious.
