So, since I’ve been playing WoW for a while now (after a 12 year leave) I still think it’s pretty lame that, after 21 years, WoW STILL has race locks on classes. Yes, I get some classes would be harder to make models for but they had their chance to remove race locking when it was much, much easier to do so, back when there weren’t a lot of races. Hell, Paladin is basically complete for all races (except Dracthyr), why it’s not avaliable to all races is beyond me. You can test out Paladin for any race with the atomic recalibrator and you can see that it works perfectly fine with nearly every race.
I don’t care if it doesn’t mesh with the lore or story all the well and I know many don’t care either. I would love to play as a Vulpera Paladin (or Druid) but I can’t unless I use the Atomic Recalibrator that has a 12 hour cooldown to achieve that. At the very least, reduce the cooldown to 1 hour so that players like me can keep it up indefinitely.
MMORPGs thrive on customization and personalization. There is indeed no reason not to expand race/class combos when the tech is available. Lore has been retconned, or outright ignored more lately, to allow for a variety of new combos. I say, let players play what they enjoy. It’d be a short-(race changes) and a long-term benefit overall…
Yeah, if it’s a money issue well.. Imagine the amount of money they’d make from the race change purchases. If it’s a skill or development issue.. well, who cares. No one’s going to mind a janky race + class combo if it means they can finally play a class with the race they want.
Yea honestly, they have given the excuse “all classes will come to all races eventually” but it’s not something they are actively working on, because it takes work to design shaman, paladin, and (moreso) druid assets for new races.
But I do agree that they should give more races more classes.
It feels like “eventually” is basically never. They’ve been saying that for years. Vulpera’s been around since patch 8.3 and that was ages ago. Vulpera still doesn’t have Druid or Paladin.
And then there’s Demon Hunter, a class that’s been around for over 10 years and STILL is only limited to Night Elf and Blood Elf. I feel like, after that long, most of the races should have it by now.
I think Pandaren, Vulpera and Dracthyr were greatly missed Druid opportunities (upon release). As for Demon Hunter, Void Elves do make a decent candidate now.
Some classes simply do not make any sense with certain races. A great example is Druids. They are servants of nature, who have a strong bond with the natural world and its gifts.
So Gnomes and Goblins, who pollute nature and don’t care about it at all, aren’t a great fit for that class. Goblins quite literally live in a trash heap, and just look at Mechagon Island and Gnomeregan if you want proof of how the gnomes respect the land they inhabit.
So no, I cannot see them ever becoming Druids.
Okay? You’re not in charge of the game. Blizzard is, and their most recent statement about class/race restrictions is that they cannot see some class/race restrictions being lifted due to narrative reasons. This also lines up with the release of the Earthen, who, yes, don’t have access to certain classes like the Druid and the Death Knight.
If Blizzard was still set on this ‘all classes for all races’ bollox, then the Earthen would have been released with all classes available to play, not just the ones that made narrative sense.
The first reason used to be “lore”, but then they steadily chipped away at that in order to give people more options because they asked for it. The other was that they wanted people to play more than one race, hence every race in vanilla has 4-6 classes out of 9.
Now, the reasons are “animations are hard” (monk), “race-specific assets are hard” (paladin, druid, and shaman), and “we wrote ourselves into a corner” (DK, DH, and evoker).
Also mechagnomes getting druids who would specifically have robotic forms, which is a complete 180 of the 11 months where people denied that they would be playable as their own race at all.
I’d love to see there be more race/class combos. With how long many of the alliance and horde races have been working together it’s not too farfetched that they’d also pass on class related skills.
Game mechanic wise Blizz can always implement things in a way that you have to unlock it via a class quest. Once you hit a certain level on a class you can do a little quest chain and then that class is available on any race you can make in the game, similar to the allied races unlock. Passing on our characters abilities to the next gen in a way.
