I feel like it was a “concern troll” type of post making fun of WoW player stereotypes. However, it did create a discussion topic that is actually valuable for others who do care.
Balancing education, career path, income, hobbies - takes some thought!
Goal 1 is to be debt free, even if it takes longer to acquire the education or training. I had no debts out of college, had a small student loan when I went back that was paid off within a year. I have zero debts now except my mortgage.
Money does not by happiness, it buys freedom. The freedom to not be in debt so you can tell others to take a hike when they ask you to do something unethical, immoral, dangerous, etc. Or when they simply have zero respect for you as a colleague and team member.
I never wanted a huge house and stuff. I wanted a cottage and the ability to tell people to get off my lawn. Also, yes, I have quit a job over ethics before. Thankfully I was in a financial position that I could and my skill set was in demand enough I could get a better job.
People should be thinking about all those things early on.
