Quick Ryzen 3600 performance overview:

Built a brand new rig!

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock)
Mobo: Asus PRIME X570-P
RAM: 16GB 3200mhz
GPU: RTX 2060 Super 8GB Gaming OC Edition

I don’t play this game very much anymore because i’ve lost interest in it. Maybe with a new computer, that will change?

Anyway, here’s a quick performance overview. All settings are set to MAXIMUM at 1080p.

When roaming the open world in Stormsong: FPS between 120-150
Boralus: FPS around 70ish.
Epic 40v40 PVP Battleground: FPS between 60-110.

Observations: Keep the graphics set to MAX when out in the open world. You’ll still get 100+ fps. In Boralus, FPS will drop to 60-80, but still good.

In Raids, you can keep graphics set to maximum, but FPS will dip to 60-70.

Simply reducing view distance and ground detail from 10 to 8 nets a sizable FPS increase. So while this combination can run BFA maxed out no problems, minor tweaks like reducing view distance to 8 will net a more smooth and stable experience in the long term.

Overall: Considering i’m upgrading from a dual core macbook pro, where I could only run the game at 900p ultra low with a shaky FPS, this is a HUGE upgrade and i’m pretty happy with my choice of CPU and GPU. The $199 Ryzen 3600 is a champ.

UPDATE 1: More benchmarks with DX12 enabled and why you should keep view distance at 8 instead of 10:

Nice upgrade. What monitor are you using to game on?

Lol i’m still on a 1080p 60hz panel from 2010.

Monitor is a huge bottleneck. I can play Apex Legends at 144fps flawlessly with this rig but the 60hz holds it back.

Black Friday is around the corner, you can always pick a 144hz 1080p for sub $200

Yeah definitely gonna grab a 144hz panel!

Personally I’d recommend getting a quality monitor. It’s what you actually look at, and a monitor is also one of the PC components most people keep for a long time. I think your rig could handle 1440p well

Some notable updates:

  1. My previous testing was done with DX11. I enabled DX12 and framerates are higher and more smoother.

  2. There is a MASSIVE difference in performance between:

  • View Distance = 10
  • Environmental Detail = 10

and

  • View Distance = 8
  • Environmental Detail = 8

With ALL settings set to MAXIMUM [10] (including View Distance = 10 and Environmental Detail = 10)

  • Average FPS in Stormwind: 115FPS

With ALL settings set to MAXIMUM [10] (except with View Distance = 8 and Environmental Detail = 8)

  • Average FPS in Stormwind: 140FPS

From my testing, there is simply no perceivable graphical difference between View Distance & Env Detail 10 versus View Distance & Env Detail 8. Virtually none.

The third setting, ground clutter, doesn’t really impact FPS at all, therefore I keep it maxed out at 10.

Conclusion: It really doesn’t make sense to keep View Distance and Environmental detail at 10. From my testing 8 is the sweet spot. Any lower and you sacrifice visuals, any higher and you sacrifice performance for virtually no difference in visual quality.

Install ryzen master so that you can enable PBO, which pushes more performance depending on your CPU cooler

Next since you have an x570, get the chipset drivers from AMDs website, but install any new windows 10 updates before doing so

Once the chipset drivers installed, go to the power plan settings and enable Ryzen Balanced, optimized for ryzen chips

Should expect some more gains here and there

Drivers and bios are all up to date.

Can’t enable PBO because the stock cooler isn’t very good. I guarantee if I get aftermarket cooling and enable PBO i’ll probably get a 5-10% improvement to performance.

You’ll get more perf out of tightening RAM timings and working on the fabric clock. There’s a lot to play around with and perf is upwards of 20% if you want to spend the time.
