Quick question about RAM

Hey guys.

I’m speccing an upgrade for my system, since I’ve been basically running the same system since the Pandaria days. So far, upgrading the GPU has given this system some extra push but for Shadowlands there’s no avoiding updating my platform any more.

My budget is restrictive so I’m putting together a parts list for a Ryzen 3 3200G on a B450 chipset to go with my (current) GTX 1060 6GB (which I may upgrade in the future, but it’s what I’m gonna run at least for now).

My problem is making a decision on RAM. Would it be ok to run with 8 GB or should I push for 16 GB?

My laptop runs with 8GB, and, while it does hit the RAM limit at times (usually because I have a few different programs running), it isn’t very common. I don’t usually run intensive stuff on this device, mostl levelling and not many instanced content, and I’m doing fine.

On my Desktop, I run with 32GB, and rarely get over 50%. So, if it is within your budget, I’d vote for the 16gb, but an 8gb is fine.

Well, it honestly depends on the game or what you want to do really. I say push for 16gb in general cause it not only allow you to play a few more games (since most games don’t go above 8gb at recommended), but allow you to task much faster or have more tasks running in the background. Especially since 2x8’s aren’t more expensive then $100, depending on what DDRX (x being the number) it takes.

While I’m playing there’s a few things going on, but not much: Spotify, maybe a couple of browser tabs (Firefox) for the occasional sim, Discord, maybe wlogs-uploader…

The thing is, since I’m not in the US and the dollar exchange rate is terrible for me, I need to justify the extra cash I’d need for 16GB. That is to say, I may go 16 GB if I really need it, but it’s a hard thing to decide since I cannot compare my current system with the new one since they are very far apart IMO.

I’m currently running an i5-3470 with 12GB RAM, but between the new platform’s DDR4 bus and Ryzen 3’s multiple cores, I don’t know how RAM usage is going to be affected. Hence the dilemma.

$70-$80 of 16 GB of RAM is real cheap, it’s best you go to 16 GB of RAM if you’re in the budget

8 gb will soon be the minimum if it’s not the norm already

Some games like star wars jedi fallen order use 16 GB of RAM as recommendation

Your new system won’t just randomly use more memory that’s controlled by what you run on it.

What you can do is look at how much ram your currently use doing what you normally do, if it’s over 8GB then yes you’ll be impacted and you’ll either get a performance hit or you’ll have to change your usage.
