Quick question about hunter pets

Hi there everyone!

I have a quick question concerning hunter pets. I can’t remember when I first played a hunter but I remember the pet having it’s own talent tree and I remember having their bar fill with extra abilities. I have a lvl 25 hunter and although I have learned all the abilities from the pet trainer that are available, he’s not gained anything(like growl) onto the pet bar and I can’t find any kind of talent tree anywhere.

Could someone tell me if I’m missing something? Should I be adding stuff to his bar and is there a talent tree of any kind for him?

Thanks for your time!

Look for Beast training in the general tab of your spell book.
Some skills you learn from the pet trainer, some you must learn from taming animals and getting them to use the ability until it comes up that you have learnt it. There are no talents for hunter pets in Classic, just skills.

Also, as your pet increases in level it can learn higher ranks of abilities and sometimes new abilities. Cats, for example, can’t learn Dash and Prowl until level 30. In order to teach the abilities to your pet though, you have tame a wild creature that knows it and learn. So keep a stable slot empty so you don’t have to abandon the pets you have now. At level 25 you can learn the 4th rank of a lot of skills,
Check out the Petopia website. It lists the abilities that can be learned, and where to find an an animal to tame to learn it. Also some info on rares, pet attack speeds and more.

Actual pet talent tree were in later expansions.
In classic, you simply train their abilities and resistances, and keep them updated.

Oh – look in your general character skills pane for an icon that looks like a slingshot. Open it, and you’ll see the pet skills you learned from the trainer. Click those (with your pet summoned) to teach them to your pet.

Hi there guys and thanks very much for your help!

Does just taming and abandoning them give me new talents or do I need to keep them for a while to learn the new talents? Do I need to wait until I’m a higher level to make sure I learn all their talents?

Ahh, thanks! I’ve basically been running around since the start without teaching these skills to my pet

Tame them, use them for a little while until you see the message in your chat box “You have learned the skill Bite (Rank 4)” or whatever, then you can abandon them.

Edit: oh and then don’t forget to teach the skill to your pet

Petopia dot com is a great resource for hunter pet info.

That is what I’m using to find some enjoyable pets. That’s how I found out I was doing something wrong, they list all the abilities and things like growl were missing from mine.

I’ll probably wait until max level before I go traipsing around, learning abilities. I can’t even afford to fly, much less train the abilities that are available to me.

Learning the abilities that match your level makes your pet much more effective. Take a look at the lists on Petopia dot com . Most of the skills can be learned in areas that you can walk or swim to. My alliance hunter just hit 17 so I’m off to Loch Modan for bite 3 and claw 3. It’s walkable from Ironforge.

Hi there Azurewinds and thanks very much for the help!

Can you explain a bit further? If I want to learn bite1, I need to go tame the proper pet and kill a bunch in that zone until I see that it’s been learned? Are there any requirements, like does it need to be mobs that give me xp or can I just tear it up on some lvl 1’s? When it’s learned, will it automatically show up on the bar or do I need to then go to the pet talent trainer and pay for the skill?

EDIT: I went and tamed a spider and learned bite1 immediately learned bite 1 and am on my way to grab a croc for bite2. I’m now in Wetlands and have tamed 15 giant crocs but bite4 is not popping. Do I just keep abandoning/taming until the talent is learned?

Additionally, I’m wondering if these will all just automatically apply to any of my pets that the attack is relevant for.

Sometimes you learn the skill right away and sometimes it takes awhile. You don’t need to tame different croc pet, just keep killing stuff. I’ve had the best luck learning new skills when the pet is well fed and I am right next to it when it’s killing easy mobs. I have never tried learning a skill when I didn’t have the previous level so I don’t know if that will work or not.
You don’t need to be in a city to train a pet. Use the train pet (looks like a slingshot) icon. If the pet can learn it and has enough training points the skill will be listed in green. Pets can only learn four active skills. Passive abilities like Natural Armor don’t count against the four. You can untrain the pet at a pet trainer. Say you trained cower and want your pet to have bite, claw, dash and growl, go to the pet trainer.

It does.
