Questions about Spell Hit

  1. Does spell penetration = spell hit? I.E. Curse of Elements increases frostbolt’s chance to hit.

I was under the impression that resistance and chance to miss functioned as they did in Burning Crusade (mechanics I am much more familiar with.) I understand that both misses and resistance-based resists register in the combat log as “Resists” but are the mechanics different than BC?

  1. If I am correct in thinking that all spell hit upgrades are higher damage increases per point, why would you want, say, an epic caster belt without hit on it but loaded with spell power, Int, and Stam over a rare caster belt with hit on it and lower spell power levels? Another great example is the neck off Balnazzar vs. the Choker of the Firelord, which is on every BiS list.

  2. Referring to the above: When is it possible via gear to get to soft cap with talents and hard cap without talents, it seems like ZG and BWL level gear could facilitate that depending upon class.

  3. Do binary spell schools benefit less from hit than non binary schools because “glancing” partial resists are pushed off the table?

Thanks!

spell penetration does not =hit. 3% is the cap for casters. hit is crucial in classic might i suggest u get 3 pieces of gear with hit on them. it will help a lot

Isn’t 16% cap against a raid boss? 3% is for PVP, no?

3% might be for only pvp but i think its for both. 16% is like impossible to get xD

3% for PvP and 16% for PvE

16% is indeed the pve hit cap.

The base damage of your abilities is much lower in vanilla than in tbc onwards, where hitcap became the most important thing you did first its more a weighted average of the stats in vanilla.

An overly simplistic example: if your frost/shadow bolt is hitting for 1,000 and your hittin 90% of the time. Going to 91% means out of 100 casts you hit 1 additional time for 1000 damage. But if you replaced that 1% hit with 11 spell power then you would still hit 90 times doing 11 more each time which = 990. So basically 1% hit is roughly equivalent to 11 spell power (if your hitting for 1,000).

The more your hitting for the more powerful 1% crit/hit become.

Basically u dont have to hit a specific cap that should be prioritized over all else, you should be wearing the gear that gives you the best overall damage. Hence choker or the firelord has so much sp on it that its better than 1% hit.

Thanks so much!!!

That’s for mobs the same level as you/pvp. 16% is the hit cap for lvl 63 targets (ie. raid bosses)

No.

Averages.

100 * 0.84 = 84
103 * 0.83 = 85

1% Spell Hit is going to be less DPS than Spell Power, depending on the difference.

Exact numbers for question 1 is really all I hope someone here can answer for us.

It is answered:
No CoE does not provide spell hit.
