I’ll start off by saying that I’m not trying to upset anyone, so if you tend to get easily frustrated, please feel free to skip commenting. I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m attacking them in any way by asking these questions.
With that being said, I used to be firmly against using addons, but recently, I’ve been hearing a lot of players defend them, so I’ve decided to give them a try.
I’d love to know:
Which addons make Raids easier for you or assist you?
Which addons make Mythic dungeons easier for you or assist you?
Which addons make PvP easier for you or assist you?
Also, there’s one addon that instantly interrupts my cast during PvP, and I’m curious to know which one it is. It happens to me quite often, and I’m wondering if others are aware of it.
If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to answer. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insights.
I don’t use any addons. I think they are a pain to manage, configure, and keep updated. They can break parts of the game, and they usually provide too much information to use efficiently.
The only mod I generally feel like I need is Vuhdo or HealBot. Being able to map clicks on the raid frames to cast spells is really useful for me when playing a Healer. A lot of people seem to use mouse-over macros for their healing, but I lose track of my mouse cursor so easily with all the stuff going on during a boss fight that having an anchor of where my mouse is going to be with the raid frames is much easier for me.
When I pickup a new class I like to use Hekili to get a quick-start on the rotation. Other than it’s just Details (to know if I’m doing really poorly and need to look at logs to see how to improve) and Deadly Boss Mods (Core and plug-ins for Dungeons & Events).
I used to use BattleGroundTargets for rated BGs, but that hasn’t been updated in ages (and I haven’t PvP’d since MoP after Resillience was removed as a PvP-only stat). I think the one for Arenas was Gladius.
This. Hekili can be very helpful if you are just jumping on an alt or something that you haven’t been on in a long time. Great way to get you back into the rhythm
Weakauras of course. I make my own for tracking timers and cds, much better than relying on packs that have way too much extra junk in them. A couple with audio cues too, like when Consecrate is about to expire.
Also IceHUD mainly because it can put debuffs near the center of the screen. Big help for noticing when I’m targeted by a mechanic.
The default UI can do this. Not that addons are overly expensive in terms of memory, and memory is dirt cheap, but if that’s all you use it for, you don’t necessarily need it.
There are many super light weight addons that just make the game better.
Simple things like auto repair when you hit an anvil or better mail.
One of my personal favorites is faster looting. If you have auto loot enabled, it makes looting instantaneous. It’s so fast you rarely even see the loot window open.
You don’t realize how massive something like that is until you don’t have it lol.
But others like handynotes are a must. It makes things like getting pets, tracking world mounts, toys, collectibles much easier.
And a current example is the holiday coins. Tomcat tours shows all the npcs on your GLOBE map, making it much easier to find them and plot your pathing if you are going for the new rocket mount.
The day edit mode went live. I put my ui back to the old style lol.
If you do end up getting a few addons I would also recommend Minimapbuttonbutton or another minimal mini map addon that files all the addon shortcuts into one button at the mini map.
You have to be Trust Level 3. We call it “farming forum rep.” And you can lose that Trust Level if you aren’t active. And it’s per character. It’s dumb. I hate it.
Anywho for addons: For raiding, I use DBM (it’s widely used, gives good alerts, and is highly customizable). I like Weak auras, which give visual cues when certain spells come off cooldown. Details isn’t necessary but gives a nice chart on who is doing how much damage/dps/healing etc. I like healbot when I’m healing, not hard to configure and makes click casting heals and abilities a breeze.
Those are the best for raiding for me. I have several others for modifying the look of my UI as well as a few quality of life/broker plugins type stuff.
