Question: Taming pets and their level after being tamed?

Hi,
Currently I’m a level 33 hunter and I plan on getting a Swamp Jaguar as my pet to level to 60. I was initially going to maybe go for Broken Tooth but I don’t really want to spend time camping it for a 0.2 attack speed increase.
Is it possible to instead get to a higher level and THEN tame Broken Tooth later if I want to? Because if I do would he be level 37 after taming him or the level I am when I tame him? If he stays at level 37, how long would that take to level him up?
Thanks,

Pets stay at the level you tame them at, so if you tame Broken Tooth at 37, it will be 37.

Levelling pets will take a while. When I originally tamed him it took me 2 actual levels to level the pet up from 37 to 45, my level at the time.

Pets didn’t increase in level when being tamed until… cata I believe?

That’s annoying. I’m not sure what to do. On one hand I could try and camp it at 37 but on a PVP server, or I could try and get it at a higher level but then have to level it up.

When I went to get Broken Tooth, it was already there with no competition over it. I don’t think it’s worth camping, but every now and then going to see if it’s there while questing might work out.

Might’ve been Wrath because I mained hunter through most of BC then switched to priest late BC/Wrath and I remember being pissed that they changed it after I retired my hunter.
