Question regarding Profession Tools/Equipment

Hello! I’ve only just come back in the last couple days since Shadowlands and I’m now looking at the new crafting and profession changes, specifically the crafting equipment you can get.

I understand (sort of) how you get Artisans Acuity and what its used for, but what i don’t yet understand is where you actually get your tools from. I know as an Enchanter I’d make my own rod, but what about the ‘Artisan Enchanter’s Hat’ and the ‘Enchanter’s Crystal’ ? I’ve checked WoWhead and it says these are bind on pickup and are created through tailoring and jewelcrafting.

Do I really have to level both of those professions just to make those two pieces, then drop them and pick up Enchanting and level that?

You can get them made through work orders.

I got mine initially done that way. Either through a friend, guild, or public.

Public you may not get the highest quality, but the most important part, the +skill stat is the same

you can initially get by with the green quality equipment you can get from the AH. But Akston is correct, the best way is to do a personal order for specific equipment from someone you know, or have commissioned through /trade or by placing a public work order (less optimal).

Just in case you’re not aware, the work order system lets you get bind on pickup gear of any kind (not just profession stuff) from the person making it, so you can use it yourself regardless of your character’s profession. Very handy if you have an alt that can make things as you can send them a personal crafting order.

Oh I see, that’s very cool.

I take it from your statement about public orders and quality that you can’t specify what kind of quality you want in the craft order? I’m wanting to go for the absolute best quality possible and I don’t have a guild or know anyone yet. Am I better off training up the Jewelcrafting and Tailoring on an alt and then doing the craft order to myself?

You can set quality in personal orders or guild orders, but not public orders. So, you would ideally find a crafter (or use an alt you have) and send them a personal order with a per-discussed commission and set minimum quality. That ensures you will either get back the item at the quality you set (or higher if you didn’t set max quality, though I’d only suggest that early in the expansion like the first week) or you get back your commission and materials if they are unable to fill the order.

Thank you all very much.
