Last week I did a +7 Gambit, on hook tail I was pulld to a postion by the cliffs with the water behind me, I was able to tank there the entire fight, only “moving” to hit the adds with the breath, no muss, no fuss just a clean kill.
This week, I tried a +9 gambit, on Hooktail, I tried the strat I used last week, but the rest of the group kept stacking by me instead of giving me room, wipe city because I had to keep moving to get the boss out of fire.
The question is: is what worked for me last week a strat that can work every time, mybe with adjustments at higher ley levels, or is it indeed a fight where the tank has to move with the group?
If there’s melee in the group the tank can’t keep the boss still really.

That makes sense, a bit, but last week I had 1 melee, this week I had 2, so I am not sure it is just nased on melee.
Edit: looking at a video of the wall strat, it seems that last week was a variation or incomplete form of it due to it being such a low key. Was not explained fully and it was not needed as the boss died so fast.
On my tank, I tend to just follow the wall strat and move back and forth. Not having to move is nice, but puts the rest of the group in higher keys at least, at a severe disadvantage. Melee can’t hit the boss after a certain point, range can get outranged, and the healer can’t reach you. With Hooktail not having his original ability of grabbing someone with the tail anymore, the fight is easier than ever, and more on teh tank for proper positioning than anything else.
there used to be a method in shadowlands where you could keep the boss along the “coastline” that runs perpendicular to that wall–this made aiming the breaths miles easier–but each time I’ve tried that again–I get complaints–so…here we are. Wall strat is what people expect…even though it’s harder to tank and more subject to stuff going sideways when dps STILL fails to stack
This makes the most sense, I think using that old strat last week sparked the reminder in me. But that still begs the question of why a hybrid strat of old and new can’t be considered, I.E. DPS moves along the wall/around the boss (especially if melee does not have to be in her hit box to hit) and the tank moves when/if the fire gets too much too close to the boss.
thats what i do now…even in groups wehre my dps are iike 3k+; it never goes perfectly. but the decent dps adjust and they will cc any stray adds.
my main is VDH and i use chains or misery to freeze them in the cone and kill them
