I was wondering if I could pick up more than one item (spear, hammer, orb, or shield) at once? i.e. if I pick up a spear and then, before using the spear, try to pick up a hammer, will the spear still be useable? Or will the action button for the spear disappear, effectively “wasting” it?

Yes.
It goes in order of you picking them up though.
So if you get hammer, spear, another hammer, etc. it’ll go in order of what you picked up most recently.
So if you go hammer then spear you will have spear first to use then hammer next
Yes, also they fixed it so the items remain through death if you wipe on the wrong trash.
You can pick up multiple different items, and you’ll be able to use all of them, but they’re last-in, first-out. If you pick up a spear and then a hammer, you’ll have to use the hammer before you can use the spear.
If you try to pick up two of the same item, you won’t get two uses; it’s just wasted. So if you’re planning to spear the second and third boss, you need two different people to pick up the two spears along the way.
