Question for you techies

So these monitors I bought (just got the wife one this morning) have HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.2 ports.
What Ive been reading is that between those two, its a toss up so using either isnt a huge advantage over the other.
But I also know the internet is full of conflicting information, lol, so I wondered what you gamers think about it.

if you had to decide between…

  • HDMI 2.0
  • Displayport 1.2

which would you use and why?

edit…also asking because they came with HDMI cords, and I dont have the DP ones…so wondering if its worth it to buy them

edit again…bear in mind these monitors are 75hz.

DP. Always DP.

HDMI 2.0 supports a maximum bandwidth of 18 Gbps, which is enough to handle 4K resolution at up to 60Hz, or 1080p at up to 240Hz. In comparison, DisplayPort 1.2 offers a maximum total bandwidth of 21.6 Gbps, which opens up a much greater resolution and frame rate potential. Just match it to what you are primarily using the monitor for, as different games will have different “sweet spots” for FPS/resolutions

I read stuff like this…but I keep thinking about that 75hz with the monitor.
Is it pointless overkill if the DP cable cant get past the limitation of the monitor?

Displayport, because there was a lot of reading and that port was summed up as the one that’ll do whatever I want to do for games.

That requires a bit more knowledge on your graphics card, cpu and what types of games/activities are you using the monitors for?

warcraft and browsing really. Im not much of a gamer anymore

I’m pretty sure that the hdmi will suffice for the max 75hz of the monitors.

They came with hdmi, try them out. I know your using either the 1030 you or may of upgraded to a 1650 gpu.

I’m pretty sure if you have a bottleneck it will be your cpu or gpu, not the cables.

Pretty much this simple if the choice is HDMI or DP. DP is the answer.

I’d never buy a 75hz monitor these days, even a 120 hz would have to be dirt cheap.

HDMI will be fine I would imagine then if you are sticking to that and just have a non-high-end rig. If you move into high-FPS games, or want to go into 4k res for video/work/etc, you should snag a DP cord.

HDMI 2.0 is bandwidth limited and 1.2 DP is stuck on 60hz/fps. If I remember right 1.2 did not carry audio until 1.2a but its been awhile sense I worried about that.

You can get a 48gbps ultra high speed HDMI 2.1a 10ft off Amazon for 10 bucks now. Your device will need the port to benefit from it. Also, DP is top dog right now because it can do 80gbps but HDMI port/cables are releasing their own DSC cables that will compete at some point.

Unless you are looking into 4k at 240hz/fps or 8k 60/120hz/fps no need to worry about that.

thats whats making me wonder if its even worth bothering with buying the DP cable.
The monitors are great for OUR use, so that parts fine… but some are saying absolutely go buy the DP cables but I think the limitations of the monitor wont make it worth spending another $100 on two cables.

Saw your follow up post, congrats on the new rig, I still think the hdmi will be fine considering your only trying to push 75 hz.

Use the hdmi and check your FPS, if your maxing out at 75 fps, then don’t worry about the cables.

From a financial perspective, I would agree. The monitor will run warcraft and browsing fine, and watch movies in 4k if you want. DP will give some benefits of min-maxing or if you change the genre of games, do video editing, etc. Current point in time, probably overkill.

Well I seen C1 48" Oled 120hz during the Oct to Jan sales got as low as 529.99 brand new. The large displays were going pretty cheap during these times. Gigabyte and Asus 42" got down to 499.99. To me that is a pretty good deal over a basic monitor or ultrawide.

yeah, I have the game set to sync at the 75 and its keeping the FPS needle buried there.

someone in here the other day was talking about the 75 being a bottleneck but I thought he was refering to some failing with the game for 75hz monitors…not just that its the max framerate.
Im good with 60 to be honest…75 is just a little better.

So in your opinion, if Im getting the monitors max FPS the HDMI is fine as is?

Yeah you can’t go past 75 fps due to that being the max the monitor supports. New cables would be a waste.

Yeah, you will be bottle necked. Possibly bottlenecked at 60hz/fps. Everything has to line up connectors to and from devices, cables, and a GPU capability.

Thanks a ton guys. :+1: :+1:
Just didnt know if it was worth bothering spending the money or not.
