My RL friend wants me to transfer to a very low population server. I am on Stormrage right now. He said that with the Auction House changes it made low pop servers WAY more viable to “gear up” and be able to progress and stuff like that.
So I am considering it, but figured I would ask here to get some insight from you guys. In DF since so much of the game is crafted stuff (I think), and it will all be available on AH, what is the downside of Low Pop Servers now? I wont be raiding in DF, just a little M+ and PVP.
Fewer buyers/sellers on low pop realms mean it will likely be more expensive to purchase crafted gear.

With cross-faction, cross-server being a thing, I don’t think it really matters anymore about server population, other than if you’re trying to raid mythic. The downside would be that you’d have some people controlling the gear on the AH on low population servers.
It doesn’t matter as much with cross realm now. I actually just switched from Stormrage to Destromath which is a ‘New Player’ server a few days ago and I have been having loads more fun with the lower population and newcomers than I have had in years!
I’m on a low pop server. If you already have a guild and people to play with, I don’t see how low pop would matter at all vs. high pop. The only difference would be how much chatter you see in trade chat.
However, if you don’t have a guild, it’s a major problem. I mean, there’s communities I guess tho. But eh.
bad for guilds ,raids or any group activity
It does matter.
Consumables and crafting materials are region-wide, but raid BOEs and actual crafting profession goods are not region-wide.
This has led to some janky scenarios where all realms effectively feel like they have an infinite supply of materials. Crafts and demand for them remains unchanged though. It is unclear how it will shake out in a new xpac.
My advice would be to wait. Personally.
Even on my full realm, I don’t often see all that many people. Sometimes it even seems fairly empty.
You want a high pop realm.
Low pop means lack of guild choice and higher AH prices.
Full realms can have queues to get in and crash when expansions launch.
High pop is juuuust right
If you plan to craft all your own BoEs then it won’t be as much of an issue. I think currently, there’s still a pretty large difference in the availability of certain types of crafted gear between high and low pop realms
