Currently I’m sitting at 2423 IO on my prot warrior. I see many people using haste/vers and barely dipping into mastery. Mastery sounds good in theory but why is vers stacked over mastery? Is it due to the way Vers works? Crit block just seems really good if you maintain shield block. Just trying to improve my gameplay.
From my understanding, Mastery just gives a chance to reduce damage through a crit block were vers is just a flat rate of dmg reduction. Most would rather have the consistency of that flat rate than RNG.
Hmm, but does the vers actually absorb more damage vs crit blocking per dungeon? Right now I have a slight over abundance of mastery and as long as shield block is up I feel nearly invincible, I just see warriors stacking so much vers and was curious if this is why they run into the fray over extending shield block by one second? Is the verse haste just that much more worth it in the end?
I can also see that verse haste could just be the best of all worlds, damage + damage reduction + increased damage, with higher haste = more attacks and more damage overall.
I don’t PvE as Prot but I do a good amount of PvP. From my understanding I would say Vers helps mitigate all damage while Block only mitigates blockable damage. This is probably more noticeable against magic damage since Warriors can only block spells for a short period if talented into it. So having increased Block isn’t as consistent at mitigating damage taken. Whereas Vers provides a flat consistent damage reduction. Vers also helps increase your damage and healing. So you gain 3 benefits from one stat that is constant. Whereas Mastery for increased Block can be strong, over the length of an entire Mythic or Raid, Vers will comparatively provide more damage reduction overall.
Again, I don’t PvE. This is just my input on my understanding of Prot and the stats. Please correct me or add additional clarification if I am wrong or missing something. Otherwise hopes this helps!
If all damage types were able to be blocked, I think Mastery would be the better stat choice.
Haste and Vers synchronize better together than Haste Mastery. Haste allows you to use your abilities more often which enables you to do more damage, generate more rage, use your defensives more often, and do more self healing just by spending rage. This is enhanced by Vers which increases all the damage you’re doing, decreases the amount of damage you’re taking, and increases your healing. They go hand in hand work well together.
That’s helps but that brings me to another question, what kind of damage can’t be blocked? I was under the assumption any physical damage can be blocked, and any magic damage can be blocked via spell reflect and spell block while active.
Spell Block and Spell Reflect do offer magic damage reduction and blocking spells but it’s only for a short duration and both have cooldowns. So outside of this Block doesn’t do much.
I believe magic (outside of defensives) and bleeds are not blockable.
Interesting. This is definitely a new way of looking at it. Paladins can block spells, I wonder why warriors can’t O_O
That would be nice for Prot Warrior wouldn’t it!!
Just class design I guess. So each tank has it’s strengths and weaknesses.
Surprising paladins get it for all the self sustain they have. Warriors have the least self sustain but the best defense.
Mastery increases attack power too, so it also increases damage.
Mastery was great… before we had 100% Shield Block uptime. Now that we do, Critical Block… isn’t that important in the grand scheme. At least not right now for mitigation purposes.
Historically, Protection struggles with Magic (which we’re not down bad like we used to be anymore, either), but Versatility is universally useful for both damage and mitigation. Mastery is the worst stat for scaling. It’s so bad that it wasn’t even useful in Timewalking in its heyday.
