Sim it sounds like a boring cop out answer.
But its honestly the best. Everyone is a little different in their stats, gearing.
Do I need to have the item to sim with it?
You don’t.
There is a way to manually add things in.
There is also a section called “droptimizer” or something similar.
Where you can give is content you are focusing on, then it will sim all items from that content to see if any are upgrades.
For example
You can sim all crafted items using secondaries you select
You can sim all items from heroic raid. Etc.
