Question about switching professions

If you delete your profession for another one, say you delete alchemy, and switch to a scribe or whatever, does that mean all your alchemy points get deleted and if you decide to be an alchemist again you have to level alchemy again from scratch?

I’m curious.

Yes.

I would never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever recommend switching primary professions unless you are very certain you will never go back. Too many horror stories of people switching and then switching back only to find they lost everything and can’t get it back.

Well, there are books in Legion and BfA that will provide you the patterns you learned from non-repeatable quests - but that is a very small amount of what you know. Would not recommend.

Yep, I did exactly this. I was an alchemist on my DH during Legion and spent a lot of time leveling it up, farming recipes, etc.

When BfA released I dropped it and Herbalism for Leatherworking / Skinning because I foolishly thought crafted armor professions would actually be useful this expansion.

I eventually wisened up and went to go switch back to alch/herbs, thinking alch shouldn’t be too much of a hassle to get back up to speed, based on what I thought I understood about recovering previously learned professions. But what I thought I understood about it was wrong. Turned out I recovered almost nothing of what I previously earned.

I was pretty confused and angry but mostly at myself for switching in the first place, and also not doing proper research before switching. But yeah… fair warning before you do it: treat it as if you will start over if you want to switch back, because that is 99% what you will basically end up doing.

In general, honestly, I think it’s kinda dumb that we can’t learn and maintain all professions on a single toon. It’s on my mile long wishlist of things Blizzard will eventually change about the game

Yes, but it is more moot now (since expansions are separate.)

So, for example, if you maxed BFA alchemy and then dropped it you’d only have to level through BFA alchemy again ( I think?) They changed it with BFA, didn’t they?

What I mean is, you don’t have to go back to vanilla and start Alchemy at zero (unless you wanted those old recipes too?)

It is also moot for stuff you can keep. Like my hunter dropped Engineering in Legion, picking up mine and herb (so we’d have… gold and stuff.)
I put jeeves, moll-e, etc. in the bank. So I could relearn Engineering, if they ever make it worth it, then use those again.
