Question about main weapons

As long as it fits on my character it doesn’t matter wich type it is?

Lets say im using a shadow priest, i can use a wand or a stick, does it matter as a long as the stats it gives are useful?

no.

The type of weapon only matters if you’re melee dps or tank. As a caster, no. Only stats matter.

There is one thing that’s more about convenience than anything. I prefer staves to mh/oh combo both because I prefer the look of staves, and also because, since its a two handed weapon, you only need to get one good staff, whereas you need to get an offhand to go with your mainhand. One drop is easier to secure than two.

If you pair them with same or more powerful offhands, to let say have same or better stats than a Staff. Then yeah, only stats matter.

Some specs require specific type of weapons (or shields) to use certain abilities, Shadow Priest is not one of them though. It’s mostly melee specs.

Not really anymore. Unless said spec is locked to a single type of weapon, you’ll use all of them interchangeably based on what you happen to have available to you. Outlaw as an example will interchangably use 1H agi swords, maces, or fist weapons (sometimes even a off-hand dagger) based on what’s available that season.

For melee only in rare instances like 2 one handers vs a 2 hander for frost DK as it can effect your build.

Not sure about casters anymore as I haven’t played one but it used to be two handers gave more stam and primary while off handers gave more secondary stats.

dual wield vs 2h matters for Frost DK, WW/Brew monk, and 2H vs 1H also matters for Fury.

At the same time, 2H and 1H are generally different classes of weapon, not like how a 1H sword is the same class as a 1H mace.

You don’t want to be using a dagger for MH as Outlaw and you don’t want a slow MH as Sub and Assassin, which is why I say that it matters for melee dps. I wasn’t talking about swords vs axes vs maces vs fist weapons.

If you don’t use 2 daggers as sub/sin, some of your abilities just won’t even work.

If you can’t use core rotational abilities, then you aren’t using a weapon your class is supposed to be using.

Some weapons say they do more damage than others, some say they do a bit less damage but do faster damage.

Idk if it matters though. I usually just make sure I get the right stats on it and that it’s an upgrade.

  • if you play a subtlety rogue, you’re going to need 2 daggers.

There are classes that require specific weapons. Read your ingame adventure guide (I think it’s called) to figure out which you need for whatever class you’re playing.
It’ll tell you.

I feel like we’re on different pages here.

You said that weapon type doesn’t really matter to melee dps anymore, and I’m giving you an example where it does matter.

And you seem to be agreeing because you said that Sub and Assassin should only be using a dagger MH.

So idk what your arguement is here.

As long as it’s equipable and has the corrects main stats, yes, you can use it.

I had figured that “within a particular weapon class” was implied. Clearly I have to spell everything out.

In my first reply to you, I said this about my reply to OP:

So honestly this whole conversation was a waste of both our times.

I never use offhands if I can help it because:

A. I’m not looking for an extra armor slot to play at the loot casino.

B. The devs forgot casters can use one handers so there’s almost always only ONE off hand that’s ever viable… and you’re probably going to pick up a staff in the process anyway lol
