Question about Implosion

Hello, should I use this on single target =) or is keeping the imps more dps

Don’t use it in single-target, but Implode away on anything more than that. Depending on your haste/demonbolt procs/mob health/etc. you typically want to build 6 to 9 imps between implosions.

Make sure you summon dreadstalkers first before imploding if you take the ‘from the shadows’ talent, wouldn’t recommend imploding single target though.

The only time you ever want to use Implosion on purely ST scenario is when you want to snapshot your imps right after Tyrant with all the damage buffs you and debuffs your target (such as FTS) have on your target. Since your Implosion ST damage is proportionate to amount of Firebolt Charges each of your imp has as well as its damage is equal to 20% less damage that FTS compensates.

Everything else in an inapplicable situation is a damage loss especially if you run Tyrant’s Soul.

Not entirely true actually. Mostly true though.

There are a few niche cases, which come up irritatingly often actually, where you’d still implode in single target.
Good examples would be Shriekwing before she goes in for immunity phase. Slam them into her with implode to keep some value.
Sludgefist is another common example with his additional damage phase. You want to implode at the end to steal max value out.

Blizzards current love of phases that essentially pause the fight to do a minigame makes these things pop up.

I could think more of pure ST implosion scenarioes:

  • Ingra Moloch on his burst phase.
  • Mistcaller before she shields herself.
  • Kul’tharok before your damage buff runs out from doing his soul sucking mechanic.
  • Devos before she goes into the air. (TBF, you probably don’t want your imps idle in this phase anyway)
  • Pride Buff Expiring in <3 seconds after Tyrant goes away.
  • In fact, any buffs you have such as Int Potion. If it expires on the same time as your tyrant expires or a second after, Implosion on ST is not a bad idea. If the Potion Buff lasts for 10 seconds after Tyrant expiring, it’s better to keep the imps on ST.

Korayn’s First Strike is an honorable mention. If you seem to get it in a last second when Tyrant Expires. But then, that wouldn’t be a ST now, wouldn’t it?

Xav dueling mechanic is also an honorable mention. As he also gives a damage buff but you probably have to spend that amount of time building imps again. You’re probably better off using Implosion on his banner.

Naming more things would actually help me climb as NL Demo Lock in M+ setting… abeit much to my own dismay in terms of mobility.

Use on ST if you have damage amps.

If ruby is about to expire and you have 15+ imps as an example, dump them with implosion to gain the benefit of the crit.

If sludges burst window is about to end, use implosion to dump the imps into the window.

If an enemy is about to get bubble, implode prior to bubble.

Thank you all, what about the Felstalkers, should I use that on CD or only on procs?

On CD generally

On CD, but you’re allowed to complain about not getting a proc

So much this.

Its rare to use in single target but the use case is basically:

  1. your imps won’t be doing damage in the near future, for example the boss is about to enter a no damage phase or the boss or the only available target is about to die in 3 seconds.
  2. The boss has a temporary damage amp that would make imploding worth the lost imp damage->see sludgefist

Imploding and leaving your imps to their own devices in ST nets about the same damage, with 1 less GCD spent. Just let the little guys do their work lol.

usually. not always

And this is entirely the reaaon why single target Implosion is so situational. Big buffs or damage windows means your imps are doing more damage right now, but once those buffs expire the imps go right back to normal damage. By casting Implosion before it ends, you are basically pooling all of your imps remaining damage to be used while buffed, thus doing more damage than if you let tgem do their own thing. In minor buffs it isn’t really worth it but big buffs? Smash that button (when the buff is about to end)

Sludgefist is the perfect example. You want to pop as many cds as you can when he smashes into a pillar and takes double damage. The combination of all those buffs and the damage window means you do so much more dps to him in this phase, and your Tyrant should be up for pretty much all of it, expiring at or slightly after the window ends, leading to a large buildup of imps not spending energy during this phase. If you just let them be, they’ll start spending energy just as the damage window ends, doing normal damage to Sludgefist. If you use Implosion just before the damage window ends, all of that energy will be pooled straight into Sludgefist while he still takes double damage, making it a VERY large burst of damage and essentially doubling the damage of however many imps you have up, which is a lot since you had Tyrant.

Yes it means you have to build your imps up again but it is very well worth it for that last burst of damage, especially on progression where every bit of damage counts.
