I’ve always played DPS specs in dungeons, I’m trying my first Healer spec my first few dungeons went good no issues, but my last 2 sucked, my Tank was taking a lot of damage and I was healing them and they died and I was kicked I probably deserved it, I went into another dungeon and my tank died again, any tips/addons practice to prevent this or just keep queuing to learn? Any penalties for getting kicked from groups?
What class are you playing?
Also, your tank could be taking a lot of damage because they aren’t using self defensives but it could also be you not putting any defensives on them.
The amount you need to heal is directly correlated with how effectively the tank/DPS are doing mechanics and using their cooldowns. If the tank isn’t taking care of themselves, they are probably going to die.
It could be something you did, but it is rarely JUST the healer’s fault. It is one of the “joys” of being a healer. Keep working at it, but you’ll definitely get good and bad groups.
Not the best place to practice but in my opinion it is better than target dummies, try a follower dungeon, especially the ones you got kicked from (if your healer is 60+).
I find it helps you get familiar with the keys and abilities and at least helps with the basics.
Are we talking pre-Dragon Flight dungeons? If so, the scaling is so whack you’re better off avoiding it altogether (Unless you have the gear). Anything post-60 should be just fine to heal.
first tip is to download clique and put your main spells onto mouseover keybinds.
then, go heal in BGs. it will suck. It will be hard. but you will learn your keybinds where there are no “wipes”. look for the best geared warrior or enhancement shaman you can find and be their pocket healer. they will love you for it.
then, come back to pve content.
make sure you are running deadlyboss mods and bigwigs (little and big). they will help you understand when bigger things are happening.
and you need to really understand the specific type of healer you are running:
-proactive? meaning you have to set up a lot of abiltiies (shields, HOTs) BEFORE the bad stuff happens
-reactive? your abilities need health bars to go down first and then you cast your healing spells to fill them back up
and the biggest thing I think is that healer life is raid frames. you have to learn to watch raid frames for damage and debuffs while also trying to stay out of your own swirlies and then doing damage during the downtime.
but go into BGs and learn your keybinds.
Keep running will give you practice. Make sure to keep any heal over time spells on the tank to help keep them alive, especially in lower dungeons if you are just leveling now. The scaling while leveling is a bit wonky and then people like to run as far away from the healer as possible in low level dungeons so just try your best to keep up.
Do not beat yourself up if somebody dies, sometimes it’s not your fault! And that’s a part of the journey when you’re new to healing. You start to realize how much dumb things people do lol.
Playing Mistweaver monk at level 35
Misweaver gets considerably more fun to play when you get all of your spells and talents! Remember to keep up the renewing mists on your tank and on another if you are able too, use soothing mists plenty at your level and you can cast vivify instantly when your casting soothing mists.! That is good for leveling too. You may also have enveloping mists too, you can toss on the tank. Not sure
You don’t need it but there are some nifty healing addons you can try out to help you keep track of what you have casted on other players. Like Vuhdo
It’ll only get harder and feel more impossible if your gear falls behind. Best to wait until 60 to try healing, or get yourself a full kit of heirlooms.
I dunno how, healer queue is almost instant and often the dungeon gear gets better than the heirloom stuff quick. I think it’s a symptom of bad scaling sometimes or the tank is pulling the whole dungeon like they do.
At that level its more than likely a case of the tank isn’t playing properly, or is used to the healer holding their hand for them. Just ignore them and move on, more than likely their screwing up and knee jerked into its the healers fault, which is what 99% of groups say. In rare cases it can be the healers fault, I’ve been in several keys this week where the healer was barely keeping up with the damage demands and caused a few bricks.
You level too quickly through dungeons to gear reliably. And the next level ilvl change is fairly significant. You can easily be 50 ilvl away from white gear ilvl at 40.
Honestly speaking, once you get to level cap, 90% of the time tanks are gonna be completely self sufficient. If you run into a BFK, VDH, Guardian, or Protadin that requires healing it’s a them problem. Healers are generally there to keep the DPS alive. And even then, if they’re taking avoidable damage its a them problem.
I’ve never had that happen but maybe so! Lol that would suck.
It’s happened to me almost every time. The only mildly fun run through I’ve had was on a fully heirloomed Holy Paladin. Even then, I swear my ilvl was constantly skirting near white ilvl (Greens were always stronger wtf).
My poor Mistweaver had to bow out around 45 or so. Good thing plain ol leveling is fine. It’s still a serious problem. Without a baseline ilvl our characters can sit at, full blown leveling gearing will always be behind.
(That doesn’t mean some classes like Guardian Druid still won’t cheese leveling).
Another decent healing addon that I prefer is Healium. It’s pretty solid, though the screen can get pretty cluttered in large raid groups.
Agreed. I haven’t leveled in a while, but I recall healing low level brewmasters in particular was a pain at times.
OP, stick with it if you’re genuinely interested in healing. It definitely gets better in higher leveling dungeons when everyone has more skill points.
Were the tanks Blood DK’s? I ask bc most people new to healing don’t know to pay attention to their runic power bar instead of their hp bar. If they have half or more runic power, they should never die. If they are below half, have heals ready. On pull when they have none, they will need your help.
As far as healing on MW at those levels goes, it’s not too hard. Use Renewing Mist on CD and when pumping single target heals use soothing mist + enveloping mist + vivify. EnvM and vivify are instant cast while channeling soothing mist. EnvM also increases your healing on the target. Chi Cocoon is good for oh crap moments, and revival is your big group heal + dispel.
Remember the tanks are learning how to tank as well. When they die, its usually because they overpulled, or don’t use their defensives correctly. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Just jump into the next dungeon and try again! Most important lesson: “You can’t heal stupid”!
