Think about it in terms of how many people there are on Earth, and how many cultures have meaningful connections to aspects of nature that are very similar to one another that are unique and special to the cultures they come from. Often times, sacred and traditional.
Azeroth, I feel, is much the same. The world is huge, and nobody knows everything. Nobody knows the extent as to which a group looks to the moon. When you look at the sky, does the moon only light one kind area? Or does it like every where it touches?
Someone who has minimal knowledge on what kaldorei or feel, or even tauren or worgen ect, might find purpose in the moonâs light simply for being there when they needed it most. Maybe there was a story that was important to them, and they want to expand learn about it deeper and try and learn more about it.
A singular person can worship the moon, and they may even call it Elune, because perhaps they read books about kaldorei and thatâs all they know. When I read the Traveler, the main character only knew his life in Lakeshire. Only humans, maybe occasional dwarf. But when he started the adventure kaldorei were not common, and when he finally met one it was a vastly different experience and kind person.
Imagine someone who just lives in a little corner of the world, who finds comfort in the moon, and only has books and personal purposeâŚI donât see why they couldnât worship Elune in their own way. The kaldorei are not going to suddenly bust their down door and claim it only belongs to them. Because moon worship doesnât just belong to them.
Take for example, the Shadowmoon Clan. Their early methods of shamanism were heavily based around the moon, the stars and cosmic events that they would align with their rituals, because they were able to identify when power would be the strongest. Their name was literally Shadowmoon. And their banner has a moon. And a lot of their wardrobe has a moon. So any orc who has a heavy understanding of traditional shamanism, but look to the moon for important ritualistic practice. Which many, might think it lore breaking. But thats just not how culture works. People donât just and toss everything away. There will still be those who seek to practice their culture.
Now, in terms of actually drawing power? Well, that is where things can be tricky. Like our kind Elune lore helper above, we only see a select few actually harnessingg her power. But Elune blessed items can be used by all/most.
Now, Gotosh here, he does incorperate the moon into his practice. It is actually one of his main three in his balance of power in his shamanism. He bases things based around the phases of the moon, with each phase representing something different. He follows itâs changes, what the full moon represents each month and what it can help with in his rituals. He makes his own blessed items that soak in the moonlight and looks to the moon for healing. But is it in anyway to the depth of a kaldorei? Or a Priestess of Elune? No. Iâm not interesting in giving him access to every power, but a meaning connection. That, as I RP grows over time and changes with interactions with people.
I have no goal or want for him to suddenly be calling down Moonfire whenever he wants or calling upon Eluneâs strength to empower him. He usually calls her the Moon (rare occasion Mother Moon) or the White Lady (as sheâs widely known I believe by everyone except tauren and kaldorei but I could be wrong.)
I heavily base a lot of his moon worship on ancient pagan practices and reconstructions practices. This keeps it in ties with his animistic faith while also sprinkling obvious spiritual connections to the powers he draws upon.
I think you can totally create a character who worships Elune, but I think you should explore a unique way to go about it. Perhaps in a way where they donât actually have much access to the power, but is someone who just wants to continue to try and understand what this means for them. To learn, to particpate in ceremonies, try and connect with other people , to kaldorei and so on. Becoming a traditional spiritualist without any kind of elemental shamanism or drudic shapeshifting. Perhaps some minor spirtual power and connection to nature, and just a want to hail the moon and be their own sort of Elune temple.
I think this will open up ways your character can learn, grow, experience the hardships of not fitting in, trying to gain knowledge about history and how they can expand their own worship to Elune, even if they canât do Moonfire or make her eclipse.
I hope this perspective helps
