Question about Elune

Greetings fellow Moonguard peers.

I had this crazy idea that requires the help of people with more knowledgeable with lore and the like.

Knowing that others outside of Azeroth have worshipped Elune , how do you guys feel about other races on Azeroth worshipping her? Is it even a thing that would happen? I have an idea for a character I want to make but its kinda reliant on the prospect of Elune being their eventual patron.

But like I said I am not the best with the lore pertaining to her so any insight would be amazing.

Okay, so, in terms of Elune granting power to other races, as with most things in lore, the answer is yesn’t. Because Blizzard is terrified of actual worldbuilding, there’s a lot of vague things and contradictions and outright retcons that then get retconned.

For the bulk of the game’s lifespan, the answer would generally be ‘no’ in terms of her giving power to other races. Or rather, races outside of the general night elf ‘sphere’ of influence established when they were a faction unto themselves back in WC3. So kaldorei, keepers, dryads, Ancients, some Wild Gods, some furbolgs, and owlkin. In addition, she had favoured beasts and such that carried her blessings.

Kaldorei were the ones who seemed to be able to call on Elune the most readily, however, and had the most overt connection to her via their blessed eyes, and Shadowmeld, both gifts of Elune that even night elf children have. Even druids of other races, it was up in the air if some of their abilities were directly from Elune or just the result of gameplay mechanics. This was especially weird since Balance druids took a lot of their abilities from the Sisters of the Moon in WC3 (moonfire, starfall, etc).

Up until BfA, however, it could have readily been assumed that Elune only granted power to those in the kaldorei sphere, and others, even worgen weren’t favoured, though canonically many items blessed by Elune can be used by literally anyone, and some rituals can evoke her power. Druids of other races using things like moonfire was simply a ‘different source, same outcome’ deal, like shamans and mages both using fire but via alternate means from each other.

Buut then in BfA we meet the Lunalai, who are a group of Zandalari that worship Elune as a loa and seem to be given blessings as a result, though not as varied or to the same degree as night elves. And then of course we have the Night Warrior ritual in Shadowlands that has Elune as this big cosmic goddess that grants power to many races. Which is pretty dumb but that’s what we’re given.

What does this all mean? Well, there are holes in this lore, because of course there are. We don’t know, for instance, how much Elune interacted with those races on other worlds, if it was to the same extent as the night elves (ergo empowering every Sister of the Moon and giving every kaldorei Shadowmeld and blessed eyes). The Night Warrior ritual seems to demand and seize power from Elune as the cost of one’s own life, so it could very well be that Elune had little to do with them otherwise until that call was evoked and she went “oh’p, who’s that? power? sure sweetie, here, enjoy death”. There’s also instances of undead actively being able to call on her power, such as the bosses in Tomb of Sargeras.

This leaves a lot of weird grey areas, especially for a concept like what you’re describing. My general assumption is that if enough of a given group or race worships Elune, she may give them patronage of varying levels, but individuals it becomes entirely up to interpretation, erring on the side of improbable.

On the flip side, you’re of course able to RP whatever you want. One avenue you could use for a long term arc is your character using an item blessed by Elune, as these seem to retain their blessings regardless of who the wielder is, unless actively corrupted (Scythe of Elune, moonstones, etc).

Thanks a bunch for the info and insight, I know some weird poop was happening in the lore about Elune but i Wasn’t sure what.

In regards to a character it would probably be better to have them sorta have faith in her rather than receiving power from her outside of blessed items? is what im understanding. I had this Idea of a character that almost died but was saved by a priestess/or priest of Elune and through that starts to believe in Elune gradually overtime, if that makes sense?

If it’s a gradual state, a weapon blessed by Elune might be a good start, and her faith growing from there. This gives her a tangible link without her overtly having Elune as her patron. Maybe the priestess saved them by sacrificing herself, and the character took up that blessed weapon in her stead. It doesn’t need to be a crazy powerful item, just something subtle to start, give you a buildup over time.

Plus magic weapons are cool.

Yea that makes total sense, thanks a bunch for the help again im loving the ideas that you brought up about the priestess dying saving the character and moving from there.

The only issue I might have issues with is my race of choice… Because I was thinking of rolling a Lightforged but that might not work considering the Lightforged part… But I think there might be a clever way of handling it.

Unfortunately Lightforged or even draenei would likely be one of the more improbable ones. Though again, you can RP what you like, of course! If you’re adhering to lore, or trying to, to some extent you’d likely be better off with one of the Titan races for Alliance. Or a High Elf, even.

Yea you are definitely right, I always wanted to make a Lightforged character but its super limiting with the kind of character you can be which is the sad part :sob:

I guess I could potentially compromise with a Human or High Elf but i really dont like the void poop that shows up on characters when you play void elf. An im not too sure how likely a dwarf would gradually turn to Elune worship

EDIT: Could the same concept we talked about work for a Dark Iron Dwarf? Because that could be an interesting character Arch

Dark Iron might also be a bit rough, but with RP anything can be explained away. For dwarves, the clan most suited, if at all, would be Wildhammer, as they have the closest ties to nature.

Think about it in terms of how many people there are on Earth, and how many cultures have meaningful connections to aspects of nature that are very similar to one another that are unique and special to the cultures they come from. Often times, sacred and traditional.

Azeroth, I feel, is much the same. The world is huge, and nobody knows everything. Nobody knows the extent as to which a group looks to the moon. When you look at the sky, does the moon only light one kind area? Or does it like every where it touches?

Someone who has minimal knowledge on what kaldorei or feel, or even tauren or worgen ect, might find purpose in the moon’s light simply for being there when they needed it most. Maybe there was a story that was important to them, and they want to expand learn about it deeper and try and learn more about it.

A singular person can worship the moon, and they may even call it Elune, because perhaps they read books about kaldorei and that’s all they know. When I read the Traveler, the main character only knew his life in Lakeshire. Only humans, maybe occasional dwarf. But when he started the adventure kaldorei were not common, and when he finally met one it was a vastly different experience and kind person.

Imagine someone who just lives in a little corner of the world, who finds comfort in the moon, and only has books and personal purpose…I don’t see why they couldn’t worship Elune in their own way. The kaldorei are not going to suddenly bust their down door and claim it only belongs to them. Because moon worship doesn’t just belong to them.

Take for example, the Shadowmoon Clan. Their early methods of shamanism were heavily based around the moon, the stars and cosmic events that they would align with their rituals, because they were able to identify when power would be the strongest. Their name was literally Shadowmoon. And their banner has a moon. And a lot of their wardrobe has a moon. So any orc who has a heavy understanding of traditional shamanism, but look to the moon for important ritualistic practice. Which many, might think it lore breaking. But thats just not how culture works. People don’t just and toss everything away. There will still be those who seek to practice their culture.

Now, in terms of actually drawing power? Well, that is where things can be tricky. Like our kind Elune lore helper above, we only see a select few actually harnessingg her power. But Elune blessed items can be used by all/most.

Now, Gotosh here, he does incorperate the moon into his practice. It is actually one of his main three in his balance of power in his shamanism. He bases things based around the phases of the moon, with each phase representing something different. He follows it’s changes, what the full moon represents each month and what it can help with in his rituals. He makes his own blessed items that soak in the moonlight and looks to the moon for healing. But is it in anyway to the depth of a kaldorei? Or a Priestess of Elune? No. I’m not interesting in giving him access to every power, but a meaning connection. That, as I RP grows over time and changes with interactions with people.

I have no goal or want for him to suddenly be calling down Moonfire whenever he wants or calling upon Elune’s strength to empower him. He usually calls her the Moon (rare occasion Mother Moon) or the White Lady (as she’s widely known I believe by everyone except tauren and kaldorei but I could be wrong.)

I heavily base a lot of his moon worship on ancient pagan practices and reconstructions practices. This keeps it in ties with his animistic faith while also sprinkling obvious spiritual connections to the powers he draws upon.

I think you can totally create a character who worships Elune, but I think you should explore a unique way to go about it. Perhaps in a way where they don’t actually have much access to the power, but is someone who just wants to continue to try and understand what this means for them. To learn, to particpate in ceremonies, try and connect with other people , to kaldorei and so on. Becoming a traditional spiritualist without any kind of elemental shamanism or drudic shapeshifting. Perhaps some minor spirtual power and connection to nature, and just a want to hail the moon and be their own sort of Elune temple.

I think this will open up ways your character can learn, grow, experience the hardships of not fitting in, trying to gain knowledge about history and how they can expand their own worship to Elune, even if they can’t do Moonfire or make her eclipse.

I hope this perspective helps
