I have multiple characters on the same server that I’d like to switch names between classes, but the thing is, we obviously can’t change to a name that’s already in use.
I’d have to make up some random name for a paid name change to free up said name, then proceed to swap names of a couple other chars. That’s be quite a bit of money.
I was wondering if I delete a main char to free up a name, then make a new alt/timerunner with the name of the deleted one, what would happen when I use restore character button later?
Would I get some kind of error msg saying “unable to restore character until deletion of other with name in use?”
I really don’t want to perma delete a main with lots of unique items/artifact weapons/achieves.
Anyone have XP with trying to multi change names on same server between classes?
Thx.
You’re basically trying to avoid paying for name change, that’s not allowed and you’ll end up having one character lost because you can’t restore because that name is in use.
How did that work out exactly? So it allowed it like normal? If it did, wouldn’t that mean two chars of the exact same name exist on the server then?
That’s what I was wondering, or if it’d just prompt for a name change, if it even did that for you?
Ya I just learned this the hard way. Didn’t even realize pre-patch they turned it off. But it was only for some random lvl 60 alt I don’t play, and judging by WW raid set for pally, I don’t foresee myself lvl one up any time soon.
The name of the character was changed on the deletion page to be like “Lorela078549” and when I hit restore I was prompted with “This name is already in use, please choose a new name.”
That being said, the character I was restoring had been deleted for an extended period of time. I’m not sure if that contributed to the ability to restore with a new name.
They don’t let you get around buying a name change easily. Your character has to be deleted for month(s?) before you can restore it after you used its name on another character.
Something I’ve done in the past: I have bought a couple of names changes then put in a ticket and asked a GM to switch their name around. They were able to help me out but you have to buy the name change first.
This is good info to know.
I was thinking of lvl a new pally now for the experimented one I just deleted, but using his same name. Then I thought to myself nah, don’t want to do the artifact questlines again or miss out on any special items in his bank.
This is good to know too, thanks.
Does Cx still do this sort of thing though? I know in the past they took a more manual approach. I even got a phone call back for certain unique issues I needed help with. I doubt they do that anymore.
How long ago was it you tried this method with them?
What you explained above is more or less what I want to do; swap names. Not use completely new ones…but you cant name change unless you delete a char, and you cant restore if you go ahead and use the same name on a new char/class.
You’d have to delete the timerunner or have a name change before you can restore the previously deleted character. The only time a name change is offered when you try to restore is if someone else on your realm happens to have that name already, between the time you deleted and restored.
Ok I give you the only fully true response that you should listen to.
If you do what you wanted to do then try to restore your char you will get an error as the name is in use. Back in the day you could have namechanged that way. You can only bypass this now by having a friend (completely different battlenet account) take your name and then restore.
However, if the character is above level 10 and more, that adds a time period of several weeks / months for where this name is actually locked to your account. This means this method wont work until your name is freed. To free your name you either dont use it at all and risk of losing it randomly later on or simply make a level 1 char with the same name and level it to 9 max. The timer goes on and you just delete this one and do above said method after it expires.
In a matter of fact, character restoration services are disabled, unavailable to use and I would not delete the character if you actually want to play it on launch and what not.
I did this exact thing occasionally before Remix came out using a second about under the same battle.net makes the system think someone else is using the name so the character can be forced name changed. But without undelete, it’s not possible right now.
