Question about Black Arrow

I have a question about Black Arrow. Icy Veins says that haste is important for Dark Ranger build because you will get more ticks of damage from Black Arrow. However, I tested on the dummies with 17.2% haste and 22.3% haste and there were still only 12 ticks of damage both times. In addition, by changing my trinket, I could add 3123 agility - which made no difference in the amount of damage the ability did. So it seems only crit (and maybe Versatility) will affect the amount of damage.

I’m asking here, because Simc keeps telling me that haste is my best stat with Dark Ranger and I’m beginning to doubt that.

Icy Veins is not a good source. Use Wowhead instead.

What’s your mastery at?

It’s at 31% right now. I lost some mastery when I started stacking haste.

Good job figuring this out on your own, that’s really cool. I think it so easy to just agree with the guides and just say “okay” to it. So thank you for field testing it.

I have found over time that Icy-Veins isn’t that great for Retail Wow content. I have found wow-head much much more accurate. BUT i actually think Icy-Veins is better for pvp guides than wow-head. Weird i know

And the 17-22% haste was that with procs up or just flat rates with different gear? I’m trying to remember what mine was in pve gear , I think closer to 12 or 15 without any procs up or buffs and I stacked mastery for the range and the damage, at around a 2.5 to 1 mastery to haste ratio, mastery seems to be the best bet as long as you’re not bottoming haste out

The haste difference was because of my trinket ( Ovi’nax’s Mercurial Egg). I can stack 30 stacks of either haste or agility. I was stacking mastery and I think I’m going to go back to that.

SimC > All

Icy Veins guide is literally written by Azorthian. Do not make comments on stuff you arent informed on.

SIMC > All

Whats really funny is both say the same thing

Dark Ranger Stat Priority

Single-Target:

  1. Weapon Damage
  2. Haste
  3. Crit
  4. Mastery
  5. Agility
  6. Versatility

AoE:

  1. Weapon Damage
  2. Mastery
  3. Crit and Haste
  4. Agility
  5. Versatility

What does the sim tell you?

SimC tells me that haste is more valuable than agility with my current gear. But following the recommendations, I have traded mastery for haste over the last week and have seen no improvement, hence I am questioning it.

Also, wowhead says that Black Arrow should scale with Attack Power - but 3123 more agility did not increase the damage of Black Arrow. So many questions…

Haste is your best option if thats what simc is telling you.

Which damage meter are you using for your testing?

I’m using Details as my damage meter.

Well aside form maybe details having an issue I don’t know what to tell you aside from listen to simc and what the sims say

You’re getting some weirdly toxic replies in this thread.
One thing to consider is what we used to call “break points”.

Suppose you’re getting 10 ticks.
If you increase haste by enough that you have 10% haste, you’ll now get 11 ticks (10*1.1).

However, suppose, instead, you only reached 9% haste. You’ll still only get 10 ticks, because you can’t get 0.9 ticks on an ability.

So lets look at your example:
17.2% haste vs 22.3% haste is a 5% haste difference.

Since you’re only getting 12 ticks, you’ll need ~10% haste to get an extra tick (technically a little less).
5% is about half that, so there’s a good chance you just simply didn’t increase haste by enough to see an extra tick.

It’s just like we used to have breakpoints for steady shot or aimed shot to get cast times no shorter than the GCD, because any shorter than that was wasted. Less of an issue now that the GCD scales with haste… I think? Please correct me if I’m wrong on this last point, but the rest should remain the same.

As for agility not changing ability damage… that seems incorrect.

Very likely could be a borked tooltip blizz seems to have a lot of them. It’s why the best way to test things in game is repeated trials and using logs.

I thought about the break points for haste and getting another tick of damage - but I was getting 12 ticks of damage when I was at 8% haste also. So it seems fixed at 12 ticks over 18 seconds.

@Xenton - I will do more testing when the realms are up, but yes - agility not affecting the damage seems really borked.

Simulationcraft and Azortharion from Icy Veins are your best sources for hunter info.
