Quest: Marks of Sargeras

I am working on Aldor reputation with my Level 20 character. I hit Honored by turning in Marks of Kil’jaeden which were dropping as expected. Once I hit Honored I expected to start seeing Marks of Sargeras instead of Marks of Kil’jaeden from mobs such as Ironspine Forgelord, Wrathbringer and Wrath Priestess in Netherstorm. However, that is not happening. I am continuing to receive Marks of Kil’jaeden in the loot when I kill those mobs.

The NPC, Adyen the Lightwarden, now has Marks of Sargeras quest (before I hit Honored, it had Marks of Kil’jaeden), so I am unable to turn in Marks of Kil’jaeden.

Is it possible because I am level 20, Marks of Sargeras won’t drop for me?

So in the before times (before they messed everything up with the ill-advised level squish and scaling), the type of mark you got depended on the level of the mob. It did not take your level or your rep into account at all. Marks are not bound so you could still want to farm the lower marks to send back to an alt, etc. You got almost exclusively KJ marks from demons in Terokkar Forest, and Sarg marks from the higher level areas like Netherstorm and Shadowmoon.

Nowadays with mob level depending on your level, you probably are limiting the type of mark you can get indirectly by being lower level.

Just guessing from the Wowhead “dropped by” page, it looks like you might need to be killing level 30 mobs to get Sargeras.

And, if level scaling is the reason, you won’t see that happen until your character is also level 30.

Interestingly, Zaxxis Insignia is dropping for me from Zaxxis Raider and according to wowhead thats also level 30 mob. So I think something is definitely screwy with marks of sargeras

It looks like that there is a new issue with the item “Mark of Sargeras”. I have created a report for the Devs. The issue will be solved with nearest hot-fix or update.

so it looks like there is an issue after all
