This eventually worked. Took a couple of tries though. The puddles disappeared after a few seconds, but were still usuable.
If anyone else is still having this issue, and none of the above works, try putting the totem about 3 steps away from the chest. Apparently if the totem is too close it bugs and thinks you’re interacting with the water when you aren’t.
