PvP where gear doesn't matter

Hello,

I have played WoW with and without PvP gear scaling. I did like the ability to login and play the game without having to worry too much about the gear disparity. Personally, I would play retail / modern WoW, including battlegrounds, much much more often if gear didn’t matter to the extent that it does. Ideally, it wouldn’t matter at all in PvP. Skill and the class could speak for themselves. This has been said before but how bad is it to play a new character in BGs? There is no point, you just get stomped immediately while flinging wet noodles at other players.

Question for Blizzard: Would it be possible to have some type of version of battlegrounds / arenas where gear doesn’t matter as much or at all? I really enjoy PvP gameplay and mechanics and would love to PvP on multiple characters rather than have to get stomped over and over in BGs just to try to eventually get competitive gear. Any other ideas that have been considered to address this?

Thank you

This is being addressed in Dragonflight.

If anyone has a link, I would appreciate it. I’ve not played retail / modern WoW in a while and I am not up-to-date on Dragonflight changes.

It was an interview Holinka had a while back.

Can maybe dig some more up off this, I guess?

Thanks! Hopefully they will follow through and eliminate this gap. I can’t speak for anyone else but this would make Dragonflight worth buying for me.

Yep. I think that it’d be the best for the most people to have a reduction in external systems (covenants, legendary powers, soulbinds, etc) and then just have the 1 set of honor gear then 1 set of conquest.

If they can nail that off the bat as well as ranked solo shuffle it could be great.

I hope they do, and that SL PvP was just one of the least desirable states of PvP among a long line of expansions to come.

So basically we should just play nude. Maybe give us a tabard to hide our wiggly parts. Because that’s exactly what you are asking for

No, he is not. He is asking for what many of us asked, a fair playing field, because ya know, that’s how PvP should be. SL is a prime example of what happens when gear determines the winner.

I think it be cool if gear had only stamina and our main stat, and scribes made things to add secondaries for us

The gear does not determine the winner. I’ve seen so many players get to 1800+ in crappy gear . I’m an average joe pvp player but I get to watch good players and gear doesn’t mean shoot to them.
Gearing system is not what is broken. They are gonna launch a new xpac and not fix the latent underlying problems

Yeah, for sure. It’s kind of the psychological aspect of it, though, where people feel disadvantaged.

Please tell me you’re not being serious.

they say gear doesnt matter much.

but i wonder how the AWC would play out if a random team had a 5/10 ilvl advantage every game? im willing to bet the team with the ilvl advantage would win a very large portion of games considering the players are most likely near the very limit of being skill capped

I lost 6 random bgs in a row today. When half of your team is below 40k hp and get one shot by the other team who are all 80k+, what are you supposed to do? Gear absolutely determines the winner in this case, and it’s just a complete stomp. One or two people who are good won’t change the outcome.

That’s different, though, as those players are good. Way down at 1800 or whatever you have people are making a dozen easily exploitable mistakes a minute.

Sure, it’s rough if you’re in unranked gear, but realistically you’re 1400-1600, so the gap really isn’t that big. Or maybe they haven’t farmed enough conq for all their slots yet and you actually have more gear.

u right. only the top 1% of people who r good deserve a fair pvp system.

any1 whois not skill capped deserves to get gear gapped

imo they should make the gear gap even worse.

like why does it stop at 2100? pikaboo is 3500 he should be like 9billion item level… he deserves it

I would love a wow game that had pvp on an even playing field like all the other huge pvp games out right now, but for some reason wow doesn’t do it and it just causes the gameplay experience to suffer.

yeah blizz is honestly a weird company.

they are alienating literally MILLIONS of potential players for what reason? it cant be money right? cuz subs = money!

they r just a very stubborn company… they usually do what they want regardless if it means they lose a million subs. i cant speak for every1 but my btag friends list is mostly people offline who have quit shadowlands… and these people stuck thru all of BFA.

that just tells u how bad shadowlands really is =( when people who played all during BFA without taking a break… but shadowlands they cant even log in because it makes them SICK . i feel sorry for my homies who just wanna log in and play a couple bgs every week.

they have kids, 2 jobs, very busy life… they dont have 15 minutes to WASTE in torghast (yes i said WASTE… that trash is BORING and NOBODY likes it therefore its more of a CHORE and less of anything ENJOYABLE)

It’s not psychological, it’s mathematical. When both players have the same item level, the item level mathematically cancels out. What happens after that is on the individuals; as skill is the determining factor.

What’s the end result of this chess match? (Shadowlands):

(Shadowlands) Obviously, the player with all queens is the winner. (MoP & WoD) The player with more knowledge and skill is the winner.
