As far as base gameplay and efficiency, PvE realms are where it’s at. Unimpeded progress.
But socially… and for anyone seeking fame and to carve out a name for themselves, or to hunt/help/interact with those who become the living legends of their server, PvP realms are just about mandatory. PvE players only have battlegrounds, and seeing an out-of-bg rival appearing in a BG you’re in is something PvE players will never experience.
Then again, PvP realms tend to attract more toxicity. Plus all those 8 minute graveyard runs…
Bah I don’t know, I’m torn. Would love to hear which type of server others plan to play on and why.
I enjoy the world being more dangerous and it’s much more beleiveable to get ganked or just attacked in general by an opposing faction than to walk through them and go on your way.
The world feels much more alive and enjoyable to me on a pvp server. Even if that means many long walks to my body.
Since the social aspect is perhaps the #1 most important aspect of playing an MMO I would have to agree that PvP realms are almost mandatory. If most people who only care about rushing through the content go to PvE servers then I see this as an absolute win.
The advantage of pvp realms is you get to gank people, the disadvantage of pvp realms is they get to gank you. It’s up to you to weigh one against the other and decide.
Personally I don’t particularly enjoy ganking people so I see zero reason to have my pve interrupted by someone who does. There’s always BG’s when I want pvp.
Ugh even on a PVe realm I had to defend crossroads so many times, some bored hunter or paladin trying to fish up world pvp by camping the flight master or quest givers (RIP Mankirk, your in a better place…waiting to respawn). Iv STILL got a macro somewhere left over /tar Insert punks name here from creeping around thunder bluff destroying a rogue that snuck in to troll people.
If PvP realms were devoid of those that practice schadenfreude, I would roll on one. But that guy that likes to just camp Redridge on his 60 rogue just makes the game unfun.
It’s more than WoW was always designed as a pve game and they just checked a box on pvp servers to allow you to attack the other faction. Since wpvp doesn’t add anything to the core element of the game for me I see no reason to subject myself to it.
For me, all the real gameplay occurs during interactions with other live players. A lot of it adds fun and enjoyment. some of it adds risk and danger, some of it changes the natural flow of the game (you spend time doing things in places you hadn’t expected to do/be when you logged in), and some of it can be irritating.
In total, a PVP realm is a more complete experience and far more fun for me.
PVE can be played as a solo game if you wish. Your are rarely if ever forced to deviate from your plan. If that is your thing, then PVE is the place. I prefer having to deal with the unexpected.
Pretty much this. Even though I plan on playing on a PVP server for added danger, WoW was always designed around PVE. That’s why PVE servers were called “Normal”.
I don’t think of people who play on PVE as Carebears. Using that term just makes you seem like a pretentious d-bag. They just prefer the challenge of the world over the challenge of opposing faction players.
I do feel, however, that something feels like it’s missing on PVE servers, which is why I’m choosing PVP for Classic.
I simply cannot make up my mind, and if there’s anything that makes me glad that the release is three months away is that I have time to decide.
In Vanilla, I played on a PvE server, but that’s mostly because my joining WoW got delayed six months, and my friends and ingame friends all wanted to be as hardcore at Raiding as they could be, and were not into PvP.
I discovered PvP, on the BGs, in WotLK, and I the realization in those BGs that the real fun in a computer game came from playing against and got other players OVER a computer, not from playing AGAINST a computer.
So I may switch, leastways at first, to PvP.
I will still make BGs—especially AV—my speciality, but I would put Raiding in second place, and for my guild to get any gear they might need.
I also wonder if putting Raids in second place, after PvP, might make those 40-member Raids more endurable…
I imagine it’s hard for people to choose. I am so used to pvp servers it’d be hard to go back. I’m not gonna say you shouldn’t go pve. If that’s your bag, then you do you. However the silliness that goes on over on pvp servers is more than worth the occasional time you get ganked.
Classic is pretty boring without any element of danger as you’re doing things in the open world.
I mean I guess you could run around on a PVE server flagged but what I just don’t find the same satisfaction of leveling to 60 and gearing out as I would on a PVP server. It’s just a different experience when you hit 60 and see other 60’s and know they have been through the same problems as you have.
