PvP Talent Proposition

So… I tried the reworked Frost DK using Xeek’s build for awhile now and… I gotta say. I never thought I definitely miss Cleaving Strikes now despite me saying that I will miss it. While it is nice that the rework is successful (mostly), I think it has some critical flaws that resulted me completely swapped off from Frost DK.

This is Reowyn. You know her. You love her. This is my Frost DK I pvp with for a bit along with other classes that I recently am trying out. She’s DW now. Mainly because well… DW scales Frost Strikes better and big Frost Strikes is the meta for Frost DK pvp rather than big Obliterates she used to do against 3 enemies!

… Now that’s not the case anymore and probably for a good reason.

It’s nice that RP is a lot more valuable for Frost. Frost Strikes proccing Rime has its benefits but not great if you are using Death Strike (Something you probably shouldn’t spam anyways).

And despite DW scales better with abilities that isn’t Obliterate, Reowyn used to destroy groups of enemies with DCE thanks to her racial that otherwise isn’t worth using. Thanks to Frozen Dominion disallows you to set up a Gathering Storm and Everfrost before unleashing the storm, DCE is definitely not worth taking. As you can see, I am abit biased against Frozen Dominion removing agencies of casting RW.

And then I realized something… PvP Talents for Frost DK are mostly kind of :poop:. I mean seriously.

  • Why is Rot and Wither STILL there especially for Frost doesn’t even support DnD (Heck, I don’t think even Unholy uses it).
  • Bitter Chill is trash and overnerfed.
  • Deathchill is probably one of the more decent PvP talent imo since you get to use a root DR if you are not using Ice Prison. But thanks to stuff like Frozen Dominion and using 2 runes to use this on Chains of Ice, this PvP talent is also not worth using.
  • DCE is sad now since you can’t roll RW anymore unless you’re using Frozen Dominion and you’d be a fool not to use it. You can still ramp with Gathering Storm during DCE but… I am really sad that the macro play I had in mind for this is just… not as strong as before.
  • Dark Simulacrum is interesting. I’m personally not sweaty enough to use this effectively but it’s a neat but niche ability that requires fringe matchup.
  • Same thing could be said about Spellwarden and Bloodforged Armor that honestly just aren’t really interesting.
  • Delirium is probably there for long arena matches that I personally prefer to deal more dammies in a different form or a mortal wound.
  • Shroud of Winter is fringe and useless.
  • Strangulate can be also be said when you’re facing Warriors but be real though… A Warrior can still tear you a new one even if you are using Asphyxiate and… yeah, for some god forsaken reason you are REQUIRED to take Asphyxiate to use Strangulate while Dismantles and Disarms don’t.

So I have a couple of questions then as a follow up that isn’t about shuffling talents and what not since we’re not getting another reworks and… god forbid have Mind Freeze baseline along with getting RW nodes for free now.

#1. Should Strangulate just be a standalone PvP Talent? If taken with Asphyxiate, should their CDs be shared? Personally, I think so. This would make Strangulate a bit more mandatory as a talent but to be frank, this is one of the PvP talent that makes you more feared against casters. Plus, it makes you more flexible between Strangulate and Asphyxiate depending on the situation be it against a Mage or a Warrior.

#2. How do you guys feel about Chill Streak returning? Personally, I don’t really care about this PvP Talent but there was a time where Frost DK being mostly about cleave would take this ability and this is a comp defining talent for a long time. I wouldn’t be surprised if this ability isn’t missed at all but food for thought.

#3. Should Obliterate Cleave return as a PvP Talent rather than PvE? 2H Frost stonks will probably be back if this is the case! I really do miss Obliterate Cleave and if this is to be a PvP talent and doesn’t interfere with PvE, Frost no longer has a blur between ST and AoE in M+ since we have Obliterate and Frostscythe respectively. Besides, FScy is good in PvE settings but it is bad in PvP. Obliterate Cleave is just better in PvP that I am really sad that it is out.

I’m happy that we use ERW to have more control over KM procs and RP generation on demand. In fact, this is yet another positives of the change. But Reowyn kind of lost two of her biggest strengths: Obliterate Cleave being a big one and a macro play behind DCE. I could still play DCE with Frozen Dominion but… it’s just not the same anymore.
Shuffled the talents so stuff like GS and Biting Cold is locked behind FScy anymore which is ultimately a damn shame.

Anyway, that’s enough of my woes with my Frost DK and probably blast with my Drakthyr Hunter that is designed to assassinate healers from afar and will master at maneuvering. But what do you guys think of these 3 points? I could use some better options for the Frost DK that otherwise I should just… well… play other classes. :frowning:

It use to be.

Idk why you’d be sending strang or aphyx on a war, esp in arenas. FDK is pretty scripted in playstyle. Grip setups on your KT by pulling healer in. Dump your CC on healer & swap targets when defensives are pressed. For this reason alone strang is always the pick as it doesn’t DR with draco stun.

also a good pick, send it on your second go when you don’t have strang to attempt to snag something. You do high dmg so your setups get players to press buttons - big opportunity to steal it.

Spellwarden is so clutch, idk why you don’t like it. Not interesting? it adds a skill ceiling to the class.

Bloodforged helps against our biggest weakness - physical dmg

Strang should for sure just be a choice node on the class tree.

To answer the question for your first sentence, if there is an enemy healer nearby: You don’t. Yes, I am aware of Asphyxiate shares DR with the Draco stun and Strangulate does NOT share DR with the Draco stun. You’re correct about Strangulate being more practical for this reason.

All of this is… kind of besides the point though. It’s crazy that Strangulate used to be a standalone PvP talent. Implying that Silence is more powerful than a Disarm due to able to lock out Healers. Hmmm…

I guess I’ll practice Dark Sim more? But I am just not sure if I can even enjoy my Frost DK anymore. :sob:

Oh well…

Yes this is all relative to 3v3 arenas, to which the PvP scene is built around. If there’s no healer around you’re probably going to win anyway

Ah yes, the good ole days…

You should! Outside of it helping you “read” the fight and anticipate what they’ll do - stealing things like clone, sheep, or even bubble is pretty fun.

Let’s see… I am definitely dropping Deathchill now and give Ice Prison a shot. Feel free to recommand me otherwise!

I’ll probably use Spellwarden. 30 second AMS is crazy. Dark Sim CD is pretty short too!

Can Dark Simulacrum even copy Divine Shield? Think an ability needs to cost mana to copy it.

I know Sheep and Fear does. Or an interesting one: Mortal Coil.

Yes you can steal pally bubble

The better part of this talent is the ability to throw it on a teammate. Example: Hunter going in to trap? AMS your healer. Trap fails.

-Looks up Divine Shield. Costs no mana.-
-Looks up Blessing of Protection. Costs mana.-
:face_with_raised_eyebrow:
This wouldn’t be the first time the tooltip in the game lied to me.

Also I can see Spellwarden casting on allies is also a big deal in arenas…
… I admit that I don’t play arenas as often as I should or would like to.
