Man PvP skill cap in this game is insane. I wanted to try out PvP this season and its so hard its insane. Im watching other mages play they can survive like they have healer non stop on over their head. I can’t even last 5 seconds in arenas or BG.
I last longer if i have ice block ready. But seriously skill gap is insane.
How the f do you manage to survive? Other mages melt me down. rogues will stun me for the whole duration of fight, warriors are constantly hitting me i can’t slow them down. Shamans places flame shocks and that’s it I’m dead, Paladins, druids, hunters.
How do you get better in pvp when you don’t have a chance to learn anything
Are you talking about level 80 pvp or leveling pvp? Leveling pvp often isn’t very balanced and you have some people who twink their gear out to be overpowered at those levels. Then at 80 (max level) you need at least the green pvp gear. Until you get full pvp gear, you probably will get melted.
The other thing to look at is what talents you select. Some good PVE talents are bad for PVP and some good PVP talents are bad for PVE. A lot of people have different specs for PVP than for PVE. Also make sure you select your PVP talents (bottom 3 options on the talent screen–separate from the other talents).
Then there is learning to use your abilities in different ways. I’m not a mage so I don’t really know the best options there but there are guides for this. And the other big thing is positioning. You need to learn how to make yourself not a target and when you can jump into the middle of it. That will take time, but learning how to position yourself in PVP is a big part of it. You have to keep an eye on your surroundings and not get target-focused. And be okay with retreating, and / or sticking with your teammates and not going out solo while you are learning.
Yeah the difference is the gear, as above the pvp gear scales like crazy, if you want to watch some mage gameplay, i like Xaryu (i know saying i like a streamer or youtuber is blasphemous around these parts).
i suggest getting a full set of pvp vendor gear at the very least: it’s a huge survivability boost. also, if you see any strong mages out there, look at their armory and see what they are running: maybe you can improve your build as well! gl out there!
The skill is in knowing what cds every class and spec has and what to use to counter or survive them.
It’s a lot. It’s gotten to a point where I don’t even bother. I don’t have the time or desire to memorize the CDs of classes I don’t play. I can’t imagine what it’s like for a brand new player who knows nothing about wow
Nah, Xaryu is a great starting point for a more casual player. He doesn’t pvp as much anymore though, so ya gotta get lucky and catch that content, and he is pretty much just automatic, doesn’t really go in depth explaining stuff.
It’s true. And the best way to learn how to PvP is to die a lot. Once you get sick of dying you figure out a way to survive and then kill everyone. In my case heal everyone. It’s a different game mode. Some players are super gifted and crush people at will but most of us are just normal players who’ve figured out how to stay alive and have fun with it. Don’t stop keep grinding it out. Die a lot. Have fun with it
It takes maybe 50 BGs to get the hang of PvP with one class, then less with others.
Start by finding 3-4 abilities you can use smoothly for damage and heals. Then start with a CC ability like interrupt or stun. Use that as often as you can for 2-3 BGs till you get the hang of it. Then add another CC ability. At some point mix in your trinket.* Add a defensive. And so on.
At some point you’ll start living longer. Then you can work on a couple simple finishing combos. Figure out where you fight best, by dying a lot and then occasionally not dying.
If you identify a good player or players on your team, tag along and be helpful. You might even get a KB or two.
Learn to guard flags and call out. You aren’t trying to kill an enemy, just delay flag capture until help arrives, or sometimes, just delay is enough.
You’re f-ed if you are solo queued and zone into a BG that’s mostly or completely premade on the other side. If you get farmed in the GY just step to the side so you don’t rez and watch a video or pack a bowl while you accumulate a small amount of free honor, then try again.
*The trinket isn’t that important unless you are pretty much skill-matched, as in general there is another stun coming immediately if you break the first one. But at some point you’ll know which stuns/slows you need to break, and it’ll become useful.
