PvP Retribution, a serious suggestion

THE PROBLEM: I think we can all agree that the current iteration of retribution does not feel as good to play as it did in previous expansions like Cata and MoP, and that most people dislike how Divine Steed functions and it’s long cd.

I think this happened because since Legion, developers wanted to trim paladin abilities and the seal system didn’t feel good, which I can understand them wanting to change, but since previously judgement had room for extra utility and power, it could be paired with the Long Arm of the Law passive (a talent which gave Judgement a small sprint with high uptime, 100% uptime in cata if you were mindful of its use), with this new Legion design Judgement fills a much more important and impactful role and there is no power budget to attach a sprint to it, leaving DS as the only mobility option.

THE IDEA OF RET PALADIN: I think that a good fantasy and feel for paladin is for them to feel unstoppable yet not very mobile, LAotL paired with cleanse clearing roots and snares, lower Hand of Freedom CD through talents helped them feel this way

MY SOLUTION: A sprint, either as a standalone talent or a PvP talent, which may be from 30 to 50 % increased MS for 2-3 seconds but decays to 15 to 20 % and can be refreshed with offensive abilities (think 3 second burst but 15% MS most of the time while in combat), this could be the new functionality of DS, a new standalone ability that replaces DS (perhaps could be glyphed to show or hide the horse one way or the other) or triggered by judgement and kept up by other abilities.

EDIT: This is not regarding the latest number tuning, that is not what I want to address this has more to do with core class design, I trust Blizzard on tuning numbers, or at least can see their reasoning

The reason they are getting nerfed in this hotfix is because as always, other classes are not happy with how much burst Ret has. Blizzard has this fetish for Ret to have 35-40% of it’s damage in Templar’s Verdict. CS, BoJ, Judge, and Concecration all together have roughly the same amount of DPS as TV.

I think they should just nerf TV by 15%, and add 15% to all the other mentioned abilities above.

the thing is that those huge TV’s is what makes Ret fun, though. Just like huge Bites makes Feral fun, or chaos bolts makes Destro locks fun. So even if they did this, the majority of people giving feedback would complain about the TV nerf.

If they just added the emancipate effect to consecration like the prot pali PvP talent has (“Hollowed Ground”), we’d be mostly fine. And I’m not even asking for all of that effect, just part of it. A magic damage reduction effect would be fair because they’ll nerf our healing eventually. Maybe add 10% magic reduction to Word of Glory if self cast for 6 seconds. Prot even has something similar called “Guarded by the Light”.

For some reason Prot pali PVP talents are better than Ret ones by a lot. I’m not asking for these as Ret, but rather as part/nerfed versions of them already build into abilities.

Uhm, the focus of this post is not to complain about number tuning, that is beyond the scope of the problems I want to address, this is simply regarding class design in general.

This has been discussed a lot. A lot of long time ret players don’t want the burst they thrust on us, we want the WOD iteration of Ret. The entire design of the class right now is extremely frustrating.

The problem is that Blizzard refuses to actually do anything about it. Instead it seems they’d rather throw burst damage towards us that they will inevitably nerf.

yes I agree, bu I feel some more positive feedbacks necessary for Blizzard to find a solution for this problem, I know they do number tunings to fill the gap and use all of the “power budget”, but beyond number tuning (which they have more data than we have to implement) I think we should focus on design, as I said, a new movement ability which maintains at least 15% Ms with high uptime would be great, what damage paladins have is something that can be balanced once they have the proper data

The thing is that they received a lot of feed back already. Since legion everyone has been adamant about getting rid of the horse, but they have stuck to it.

I just don’t think they care.

Ret was able to literally kill someone from 100% health to zero in a single GCD that shouldnt exist for any class it was broken and bad for the game.

There were multiple streams and videos that are floating on youtube all over the place this needed to be fixed.

Did you read the posts? We all agree. We don’t want any of this design. We want the WOD/wrath paladin back. I’m tired of the buffs and nerfs. We all said not to give us the burst and that they were going to just nerf us and all be damned, they did. I’m tired of this crap.
