The other day someone mentioned that on an RP server you can still do some world pvp, but they didn’t clarify how when I asked them to. They mentioned that you would just need to “flag yourself,” and that ganking wouldn’t be a thing. Would any of you fine folk please clarify? I’m interested in world pvp, I’m also interested in RP servers, and I’m not attached to ganking. So it seems like what they were referring to might be the answer, but again, they didn’t clarify.
You can type “/pvp” in game to flag yourself. This will allow other players of the opposite faction to attack you, but you can’t attack other players unless they are also flagged. It will persist until you type “/pvp” again.
So basically any world pvp will be consenting on both parties opting into it. If you are flagged first, your opponent will likely get in a free first shot, but this shouldn’t be a problem for a gentleman.
Back in the days before BfA, you could activate your PVP flag on any non-PVP server by typing /pvp, wandering too close to a town belonging to the opposing faction and attracting the attention of the guards, or by attacking opposing faction NPCs. (Actually, this is still the case, I think)
In the old days, even on RP servers, other players would come defend if someone was attacking NPCs. Even as late as Wrath, on the RP server I leveled on, there were regular WPVP battles at quest hubs like Auberdine and the Crossroads.
Then in Cataclysm, it started to die out. Like a lot of stuff.
The same people who say Rp servers have a lot of PVP are the same people who say PVE servers have a lot of PVP… So… Yea…
Good luck getting anyone to flag with you on carebear servers, especially RP.
Care bear STARE!
Flag up. Watch world def channel. Go kill horde when they start attacking lowby areas. See a flagged horde and attack (don’t be a d though, flag up first)
There was lots to be had despite what the PVP only people say.
I have seen some fun fights on RP servers. Usually starts out as a simple RP session, then (with a bit of coordination with the other side) a fight happens, then all hell breaks out as other people join in.
Yep, which is why us RP-PVPers want an RP-PVP server.
I remember the 40 Shaman vs 40 Paladin fights in Mulgore on Scarlet Crusade(RP). Great hoot of a time.
Eh, it’s not the same as pvp servers where you park your 60 near where your alt is questing to protect yourself against lvl 60 gankers. But I parked a character at the crossroads to pvp because it would be attacked most of the day. Sometimes by groups, sometimes by whole raids. There was a few places you could pretty much always count on finding world pvp going on. STV was fun because people were almost always flagged due to the arena/people attacking people flagged after they left the arena. STV on my RP server didn’t feel all that different than on a pvp server except if you were getting camped by 5 people or max levels you could just wait for the flag to drop and bail instead of having to switch characters and do something else. The amount of pvp going on was pretty much the same though.
We also raided the enemy cities all the time.
So yeah, it’s not the 100% constant forced pvp like a pvp server. After a year of watching my friend play on a pvp server I didn’t have much interest in that kind of experience (especially when 10-15 min after logging on his alt he’d have to switch to his main to get a lvl 60 to stop trying to camp his alt. Every single time lol). But it never felt like my server lacked the option to world pvp when I was looking for it. And I looked for it a lot.
I dunno what it was like on other rp servers, but world pvp was pretty active on mine.
I played on a low pop rp server in Vanilla. We’d flag up and we’d end up in fights every night. No the quality of pvp skill isn’t as good as pvp realms. But frequency was fine.
We also had pvp events a couple times a week. Like Horde were in Sentinel Hill or Duskwood or Ashenvale. Pvp would be all levels. Alliance would go XR, Tarren Mill.
We even had a gnome mage around level 30s or so who attacked Camp T for almost 2 years. I kind of think of that mage as a hero today. He made sure every horde leveler saw some pvp on my server if they wanted. That’s really generous. We also had guys who’d attack the banks and ah’s for months on end.
Outside instances if you were flagged, get ready for fight.
It was fun. I don’t know if it’ll be same way.
I can say though, from leveling on pvp servers many times, and playing at cap on them, a lot of times players will just run around eachother, too busy pveing or harvesting. But on the rp realms, red = dead.
RP-PVP realms were very fun, but even they had lots of too busy to pvpers.
I wouldn’t claim that Steamwheedle Cartel had a lot of wPVP but it wasn’t non-existent either, there was one Prominent horde PVP guild that liked to get stuff going when they weren’t doing BGs. Argent Dawn where I started had more, there was someone attacking Southshore/Auberdine pretty often.
If one wanted wPVP it was there.
This made me chuckle. In BG’s 8 out of 10 times the worst players and most loud whinners where those from PVP realms.
I’m looking at you Malganis and TIch
I was on a RP server in Vanilla.
If you do a BG then run out into the world after before your flag falls off you can be killed.
There were guilds who were pvp guilds that required their members to be flagged at all times.
All it takes is one flagged person to be attacked to start a wpvp battle.
This is from my RP server:
hehe, I remember that. Those fights would crash the server.
If you go RP-PVE read up on something called “bluewalling”.
If by some chance we get an RP-PVP server, that is what I recommend. All the best parts of both.
I think it depends on who rolls there. The population of non PVP server types has changed a lot and there’s a lot of pearl-clutching about PVP now. Some players are under the misconception that they should should be 100% safe from any form of PVP on a non-PVP server these days.
I have news for them; in Classic there are quests that will auto-flag them without warning!
“Shortly after the first fight the server crashed” lol some things never change
The biggest issue I had with Argent Dawn in Vanilla is that a big section of the players were not roleplayers, but were there because of the same reasons some people are going to roll on an RP server regardless. They prefer the community, who are more accommodating or in general, “nicer” than other servers.
The meme had become “well if you don’t like roleplaying, why are you playing on a roleplaying server?”
“I have friends who play here.”
That said, quite a lot of those players were in it for the ‘game’ - and that includes the PVP. So, yes, there were pretty consistent raids on the usual targets. Tarren Mill vs. Southshore, or the Crossroads raids.
City Raids occurred from time to time, and in time, it completely lost it’s meaning. At first, it’s a rallying cry for your city to get together to defend against a raid, but then it just stop being relevant until achievements came back and then people only did it for the war bear. “Another city raid?” “Yeah.” “Eh, I don’t need Bolvar for anything right now.”
Will wPvP happen on a Classic RP server? Yes. The unknown will be if it means anything other than PVP for the sake of PvP. I like RP-PvP, with stories, and in-character reasons for a fight. But I’m a roleplayer, with an intent on social roleplaying.
