PvP modifiers are the tuning nobs for PvP combat which balances abilities and differs damage breakdowns between game modes. They are essential for making gameplay smooth and fun, but in some instances they can be forgotten burden that a specific class or spec bear. One example of this would be fire mage, which has had Blazing Barrier nerfed since it’s reign in Shadowlands, and has not been revisited despite Prismatic and Ice Barrier still being at full strength. Another example is DK, albeit more recent, has been nerfed since the start of Dragonflight. Interactions between Spell Warden, Anti-Magic Shield, Will of the Necropolis, and Death Strike meant that they could absorb large portions of damage, and then contribute all the absorbed portions of damage into big healing from Death Strike. This was again compacted by the fact that Unholy Death Knight had additional sustain from Necrotic Wounds. All of these abilities have been nerfed with PvP modifiers, and Spell Warden has since been removed from the game. Now in this existing caster the weaknesses of DK become all the more apparent, as what is traditionally an anti-caster class now gets rolled over as Spell Warden was removed, and the nerfs to AMS and Death Strike remain.
I implore the WoW design team to look closer into PvP modifiers and to consider the reasons for why they are implemented. I also suggest taking a close look at class and spec design when it comes to PvP talents and how they interact with tier sets when it comes to patches. I’d prefer to have PvP specific bonuses so there isn’t a case like Unholy DK where they can’t access the 4-set bonus without Raise Abomination, as Army of the Dead is unusable in PvP combat.
Cheers, Sha
